Default Update on Ford Racing Ecoboost Crate Engine

Just thought I would give you guys an update on trying to use FR crate engine on my 2012 F150 Ecoboost. When I purchased it, FR did say it would work and hook straight up with my existing ecu. Well, that wasn't the case at all. The turbos on the new engine use a single electronic BOV for both turbos (located on the IC), while the 2012 have BOV on each turbo and are vacuum assist, so the ecu would not work. So to try and make it work, we were going to take the turbos from the old engine and put them on the new. Sounded simple enough. But then the wiring harness would not switch over to the new engine because the cam censors are in a different location and the spark plug connections on the passenger side are on opposite side (facing away from the intake). Also, the new engine had a vacuum brake booster located behind the passenger head to help assist in braking. After countless phone calls to FR, Ford, speedshops, Ford Dealers, anyone who might know (this went on for two weeks) noone could tell me how to make this work without more $$ to throw at it. So FR let me return the engine.

So to the guys who blow their engines, you have to have a 2013/2014 for this application to work. You could probably buy a new ecu, but noone could tell me if that would solve everthing. I hope this helps someone one day and saves the aggravation I went through.

Sorry it didn't work out for you that had to be a major headache. Sounds as if Ford should have provided you with more accurate information. Thank you for sharing this with everyone.

Mitch03 ...
Excerpted from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog for the 3.5L Gtdi Ecoboost V6 Engine Kit M-6007-35T

...

NOTE; Currently engine requires stand alone aftermarket engine controller and custom engine calibration to function.
Should have been clue # 1.

I think I pointed out weeks ago that the fr eb has the garret "car" turbos. That was another clue.

I called FR and asked that question if it would work with my existing ecu, and they said yes it would. They explained the notation is for folks using it in another application other than F150. Simce i had an existing ecu for the exoboost, i was good tomgo. So that's the direction I went.

I'm assuming this was a windowed block and that's why you wanted to buy the new crate engine? Why not just buy the short block and have the heads refreshed and go from there? I'm sure you already had considered it, but just a thought

I'm thinking this is the way Ford dealerships will go. It makes sense.
