Default Turbo torque upgrade

So this will probably catch some flames or the typical "just buy a eco boost" response. But has any one really played around with a small turbo on the 5.0.

Say somthing small like a TO4E 60-1 with a smaller exhaust side to help it spool down low for torque. Say modest boost at 4-5 psi with a external waste gate.

No one has boosted a 5.0 with a turbo built for low-mid range power?

A little surprised I admit.

This reminds me of the 1981 turbo 301 Pontiac.

Anyway, I don't think anyone is willing to invest that kind of time and money then limit the power potential by undersizing the turbo. It will also result in excessively high exhaust pressure and all the bad stuff that goes along with that.

I would think that most who are looking at turbos are going for higher HP numbers.

Any reason you're looking at turbo's vs. going with a super charger? There seem to be a few decent super charger kits out there that would provide a nice bump in hp and are very drive-able.

Just a shot in the dark, but you may find something that others have done on the mustang forums.

It actually comes from two of my old vehicle builds.

2000 WS6 LS1 trans am. I originally used a TTI 60-1 and made 450whp but a massive 500 ft-lbs of torque. The motor was stock with a custom 232/228 turbo cam and ARP head studs. The car boosted very fast and was fun to drive in the mountains or on the 1/4 mile. It also cut a 1.6 60 time with 315 drag radials 3.42 gears and a 3200 stall convertor in a built 4L60. The down fall of the car was when I upgraded to a 72mm and the car made 530whp but lost its "fun to drive" factor.

The next vehicle was my 05 crew cab 1500 Z71 (very similar to my FX4) That truck had a very simple magnacharger on it running about 6 pounds of boost. It made around 360hp and 390 torque on a dyno jet. The supercharger was fun but was not great for towing. Of course the 4L65 also made the 4 to 3rd gear down shift very noticeable and would cause a surge. Basicly it would go from lugging down in OD then down shift into instant boost.

Engineermike: I didn't know any one still remembers the old 301 turbo firebirds.

Blown F-150: I think the key would be a good size external wastegate. That way the turbo could get into boost at under modest engine load but prevent boost creap and keep drive pressure down.

I agree that overall Turbos have the advantage while towing. I ran a Pro charger (P1SC 2 core Kit) with some upgrades like bigger 42lb injectors, 12psi pulley, VMP tunning, etc. I only towed 3-4k lbs, but it did pretty well overall.

I ran a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT with a Roush kit 6psi, intercooled. Pretty much out of the box other than a tune from Troyer. I also towed the same amount with it, (sleds, quads or dirt Bikes on a trailer).

Overall I actually preferred the Pro Charger for towing, but the Roush for DD duties. I had custom towing tunes for both as I had similar issue with shifting as you did.

I will say for me that one of the largest factors with towing and turbos is how much quieter it is. After a few hours towing with a roots blower, I was ready to buy some ear plugs.

Looks like you are in for a completely custom set up. Certainly doable, but it will be some work. Maybe you could find a used STS kit or something to rob most of the parts and save some time.

I agree with the sound issue from the screw type blowers. They definitely whine especially on long hills with a load once you hit about 2500rpms.

A single turbo would be the way to go to help keep the cost down. I think a remote set up like the STS would be the way to go.
