Default Trans slammed into 4th from 6th

2012 ecoboost screw 4x4. Was going 60 mph with cruise on and had to accelerate a little bit to pass a car...got up to about 75 and it never downshifted (this was normal as I didn't press the go pedal very hard) as soon as i let off it slowed to about 70 mph and slammed down into 4th. It eventually got back into 6th. Going to dealer on monday as it was a pretty violent affair. anyone else have this happen to them?

We're you towing? Was transmission in tow/haul mode?

My buddy had something similar. Ended up being a speed sensor in the tranny.

Was the cruise on? Was it just a downshift or a slam? These trucks will downshift to keep the set speed if your going faster too. It shouldn't be slamming though. The downshifts in my truck are usually pretty smooth.

Yes cruise was still on. Not towing, tow/haul was not on. I have the 3.31 gears also. It's never downshifted before unless I really press the gas pedal. Normally and even after this happened it shifts smooth as butter...but this was violent enough and loud enough that I thought I had dropped the trans and was looking behind the truck for parts flying all over the road.

If you leave the cruise on and accelerate up, when you let off the gas it'll downshift to bring it back down to speed. Yours may have just downshifted to far and spiked the rpms up real high.

I don't think any engine will be as bad as that one.

Agreed. The 6.0 was pretty bad. Thanks to the aftermarket world those engines can be made reliable and get good mpg. It takes money though so unless you really love your truck it may not be worth it.

I think you hit the nail on the head Centrex. Mine has done the same thing with the cruise on, but not as violent as the OP says. It is quite aggravating. I try to remember to ease off the gas so it doesn't happen.
