Review: FlowMaster 40 & MagnaFlow 14"
I had my muffler replaced last week with a FlowMaster 40 series and today I replaced it with a 14" Stainless Steel MagnaFlow. I have a 2011 5.0L SCrew and only replaced the stock muffler until I could afford a dual setup. Here is my review/opinion on both....
The FlowMaster sounded nice but the cabin drone was too much for my wife and I. The drone was between 1600-1900 RPM's and honestly it is very hard to stay out of that range when driving. The drone would echo so badly in the cab you had to turn the radio up to higher than normal listening to hear it.
The MagaFlow that was just installed today is so much deeper and mellower sounding compared to both stock and the FlowMaster. At idle the truck sounds close to normal stock but with a nice rumble. When driving it sounds really nice but not as loud as the FlowMaster and the best part....NO DRONE! I can actually hear myself think, radio is back to the level at which I listen to it and I could not be happier....

I agree and disagree. But we have/had different setups. Mine true dual vs yours replace stock muffler. My flowmaster 44 vs your 40. My magnaflow 18 vs your 14
Anyways to me the magnaflow deffenitely no drone, but way to quiet during normal driving.
Flowmaster mine only drones at highway speed no drone in town driving. Lucky me I dont do much highway driving in the truck. Brother has a focus for those trips.
The part I disagree with is that flowmaster has a much deeper roar than my magnaflow ever did. But we had two different setups.
Does yours have any crackle above 3500ish rpm? That was the main reason I had to get away from my magnaflow. It sounded way to ricey when I got on it.

Wow, that goes to show what 2 different setups can do. The FlowMaster crackled when I really let it rev up but the MagnaFlow does not and I do not know what the rpm's were as I didn't pay attention. Also, I do highway driving so the FlowMaster is out for me.
Is your dual a catback system, do you have a tuner or CAI? My plans are when I have the money to go with a true dual, CAI and a tuner.

No it is custom. Cut where the factory y was and 2 pipes all the way back. No other mods now. I plan on ordering the boss kit with Cai and tune this weekend. Another note I did keep the magnaflow for after long tubes and high flows just in case the flowmaster becomes too much. For me the magnaflow just wasn't deep enough tone. But like you said seems like it is complete opposites for us now.

Once headers come out and get to be reasonably priced I will. I have a feeling they will be $1000 at first until there is some competition to drop the price. So it may be a while before the price is right for me. I would bet that 5star gets them pretty quickly.
