Why is this news?

It's always been the rule that if you mod your truck, and that mod causes a failure, your warranty is voided... I haven't seen a tuner melt down a motor or cause a transmission failure yet...

It sucks that you might not have a tuner available right away, but they'll be here.

It is news because Ford is telling the techs up front to watch out for mods to the ecoboost and have issued them a bulletin as to what data to save. In the past the pcm's weren't designed to store changes to their parameters from a tune. Guys would put on a programmer, damage them, return the tuning to stock and have Ford warranty pay for it. Now who do you suppose has to pay for that in the long term?- us the truck owners as they just increase the price next year.

If you haven't seen a tuner cause a transmission to fail or stretched head bolts, blown head gaskets and melted pistons, then you don't know anything at all about Ford and the 6.0. Go do some research.

Putting a tuner on a gas engine is not much of a deal, you might get 25-35 extra hp and torque- not enough to damage anything. Problem is the ecoboost is a gas turbine engine. All you gotta do is increase boost a few lbs and power takes off. For the 6.0 you can increase the boost and easily add 125 hp. EGT's get too high and you have melted pistons. The ecoboost already runs hotter than a diesel and probably can't take much more.

is there a site for f150 modding enthusiasts that actually have information for those that want to mod their vehicles and not block the intercoolers and everything? bc i've been looking and haven't found one yet

like i said , this is a sincere question

EcoBoost and mods, it is pretty common knowledge that the DISI 2.3 turbo engine in the Mazdaspeed 6 and 3 were the test bed for Ecoboost engines. Part of the reason the had encrypted and very tough to hack ECU's. If you spent anytime on the Mazda forums....well making big power on those cars proved to make some interesting explosions. I think the most made without catastrophic failure was in the ballpark of 400whp. The 2.3 was rated at 274bhp in factory trim.

Now if someone wants to make big power on a EcoBoost.....here are my suggestions.
You will need Full access to the ECU

Get someone that does Volkswagon Direct injection pumps to beef up internals to the injector pump....Remember the injectors have a line pressure over 2000 psi

Custom Forged pistons lowering the top ring down further than the stock piston, and lowering the compression a full point.
Port and Polish the heads, Sheet Metal custom intake. ARP studs throughout the block, the block is beefy enough for 1600whp since it is just as strong as the 3.0 Duratec and the Noble guys are making big power on them.
Connecting Rods should be upgraded to Pauter Units.

upgrade the intercooler, the turbos and the piping to support the power levels desired.

Cost for a project like this $20-$30k easy, unless you own a machine and fabrication shop.

my friend owns an ms3 and is making plenty of power with minimal mods to his (tuner/intake/downpipe he is pretty close to 300whp i believe) and it is very streetable and you are correct about the 400whp.. my friend's tuner is making 449whp and 536 lb ft of torque on his stock block

so i believe just getting a tuner to smooth some points out here and there and just correct some things in your own vehicle(accounting for all parameters) will allow the ecoboost to pick up pretty decent power throughout

and i believe the extra 25-35 hp/tq will be enough to make people happy without sacrificing any drivability, durability, or reliability

boost is also nice as well been addicted for years now

The thing is most manufacturers have figured out people want max power already and they are leaving less under the table so to speak when it comes to gaining more power with a tuner.

Now Ford got smart with the way the designed the ECU's, they are not unhackable....but the information they store now when they are hacked is showing up and being stored for a tech to find it and deny a warranty.

If they are hackable then a tuner can be made to not log the data or at the least delete it.

There will be a workaround in no time. Never fear.

And the deleted information will show up as a blank....The way around it is to leave stock appearing data in place of altered.

Since when has this been the case, do you estimate? This year 2011? Or earlier?
