Synthetic Oil! Whose Running it? How many miles?

Sooo I was told by a Ford tech that the reason for the up to 10,000mi oil changes was that Consumer Reports and others compare maintenance costs when comparing trucks. Ford marketing went to Ford engineering and asked "How can we reduce maintenance costs and still get thru warranty?". The response was, among other things, the increased oil change interval. Since Ford is pretty conservative especially when it comes to the drivetrain surviving warranty he said you could probably get well past that but he changes his oil about every 5,000mi.
He reminded me that you can set the oil life to 50% when you change your oil and it will basically cut it to 5,000 mi.
I am not a tech, mechanical engineer or affiliated with any lubricant company.
The explanation above does seem plausible to me. Since changing to synthetic and oil change intervals to 5,000mi about 20 years ago I have had no engine problems related to oil. I know that is not scientific.

Any major brand full synthetic will be far better than a synthetic blend or non-synthetic. Some 'Premium' full synthetics might be marginally better than others. I run Red Line synthetics in cars that I track, Mobil 1 in my EcoBoost.
"Semi-synthetics" are a scam. Less than 30% synthetic, sometimes as low as 10% synthetic. Pay the small differential and get full synthetic.

Here is another interesting find about Royal Purple. It finished significantly behind Mobil 1 in the oil test but real world wear doesn't seem to back up some of the data in that blog. It's not the most scientific test but does get wheels turning about the validity of some of oil testing data. There is mountains of conflicting info out there. http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...ustang-gt.html

Yes on the 5,000 mile oil/filter change intervals! I don't care wha' the manual says about that, I will not exceed about 5,000 miles. I mean what in the world? We pay high dollars for trucks then squeal about buying full synthetic oil and squeezing it out to 10,000 miles or more?! That ain't right thinking boys.
