Default Running Rich

Since I bought my truck earlier this year I thought it was running rich by the amount of carbon on the tail pipe and had told the dealer so at my firstservice. But I got the speech that there is a break in period and the fuel economy will straighten itself out at about 10,000kms. I'm at 12,000 now and it’s not any better. I am getting about 15-16 l/100km on the highway with premium fuel. That is not good... There is even a hint of black smoke at idle in the mornings when I let it warm up for a few minutes and get the kids loaded up. Has anyone had any problems with this? I'm not getting a check engine light so I don't think the dealer will do anything. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Normal and WAD (Working As Designed) for all EFI (and even E-choked carb'ed) engines.

At start-up the PCM puts the fuel system into rich mode until determined warm-up criteria has been attained.

If you're only getting 15L/100 hwy, what's your average to date?

Look at your build date, there is an emissions recall for some 2013 trucks for a test that doesn't complete causing the engine to run rich and poor fuel economy. Not sure what the date range is. But could or could not be your issue.

I am having similar issues! 2013 here as well.

I bought my truck thinking the mileage would improve with some miles on it and it hasn't. My tailpipe is blacker than my diesels tail pipe with soot and I can barely get 14.5 MPG in town no matter how I drive. The most I have seen on the highway at any speed is 18.2.

I have taken it to one ford dealership trying to get them to look at it and they say the tail pipe and mileage are normal. It hasn't thrown any codes so I don't think they are really bothering to look into the problem.

I borrowed my buddies FX4 ecoboost for a week and drove it just like I drive my truck and got 17-18 mpg in town. I took it on a small trip and got 21-22 so it isn't my driving. hell his is 4wd and mine is 2wd I should at least be getting similar mileage!!! Also his tailpipe is spotless!

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 2013 model year F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine built at Dearborn and

identified in OASIS. In addition, for a list of vehicles assigned to your dealership, visit

REASON FOR THIS EMISSION RECALL
In all of the affected vehicles, the Downstream Catalyst Monitor Sensor (DCMS) Onboard Diagnostics
test does not complete. While the DCMS test is running and not completing, the engine air-fuel

Control Module (PCM) to the latest level using IDS release 85.02 or higher. This service must be
performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.
NOTE: The State of California and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts require the completion of
emission recall repairs prior to vehicle registration renewal. For vehicles registered in these states,
please provide the owner with a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction certificate after the
repair has been performed. These certificates may be obtained by contacting your regional office.
OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE
Owner Letters are expected to be mailed by September 20, 2013. Dealers should repair any affected
vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.
