2013 RX4 startup noise and solution
Well I got the notorious chatter on cold startup - would up being cam phasers - per the TSB 15 - 0131.. bought the truck from carmax with 36K and put 20K on it. about a month ago the chatter came - my awesome dealer got it broken down quick and found cam wear - aluminum shavings in the cam phaser screens - Thank you Ford for standing behind your product and replacing the engine 
- I bet the wear started with previous owner I assume prolly changed oil every 10K per oil life indicator - I have done it every 5K Pennzoil Ultra and a WIX Synthetic Oil Filter XP (with check valce) since I had for 20K miles. No sludge anywhere, but not the cleanest internals at 56K - these motors create a ton of carbon... looking for a long life out of replacement motor. Service manager at dealer looks for sludge when this happens to a motor - stated the boosted engines carbon up and run dirty and said continue changing oil every 5K.
After a bunch of research on the catch not sure a catch can will help anything.. much of what I find shows crud being condensates out - but reviews and conclusions indicate doesn't hurt but not much difference in motor cleanliness over all - I will be waiting to make decision when Truck hits 125K miles at end of extended warranty.. don't have the warm fuzzies on spending $100's for something the FORD may have appears fixed with ECU software changes that affect valve timing... my noise and state of my truck.
