Default Turbo sound

Okay, how come some turbos can barely be heard if at all, and some from 500' away?? How do you get some cool turbo whine out of an EB without trashing it?

It seems like the pimped out diesel trucks always have turbos that can be heard a long distance away, but I have never heard a turbo'd gasoline engine make much whine at all.

I'm looking for a learning opportunity but sarcasm is okay too. I can use a laugh today.

I believe it has to do the size of the blow off valve and how many psi the turbo is running.

bigger inlet pipe, bigger intake, more boost, makes it louder.

i know with diesels you add a bigger intake, bigger exhaust, turn up the boost, and take off the IC foil it really makes it scream

IC foil? Intercooler Foil? What's that? some kind of heat shield/insulation?

idk about the ecoboost but the diesels came with wraping around the intercooler pipe to dampen the sound

I think Ford is afraid if anyone actually heard a turbo charger in an F-150 they would go mad or something

I will sacrifice myself and be the test subject for that experiment however I may be disqualified due to pre-existing conditions

I had an 86 SVO mustang. 2.3L turbo. In 86 it's hp output was 210 the GT with 5.0 was about 185. Back then people weren't ready for it so it flopped with 86 being the last year. It was more expensive than a GT had koni racing struts 4 wheel disc brakes tubular a arm suspension the motor was balanced with forged aluminum pistons and forged aluminum h beam rods. It was a bad car. so I bought mine in 1997 replaced the stock exhaust with a 3 inch downpipe right from the turbo to behind the passenger front tire. No backptessure at all. Got a bigger intercooler changed from a vane air meter to a 90 mm mass airchanged stock throttlebody to a 75 mm ran a 12 inch k&n filter in the fenderand fully ported the intake. Then changed injectors to 72's from 24 then used a very large external fuel pump and upped the boost from 14 to 32. When you cranked it up u could here the whine from a mile. But that's because there was no exhaust and very little restriction on either side intake or exhaust. Now this was a toy not a new truck with a warranty. I would be very careful with messing with things because if you let more exhaust out you've gotta let more air in and more fuel. Gotta have a rich lean gauge to monitor very close detonation is a very bad thing. The blow off valve they were talking about keeps you from bending compressor blades by pulling your foot off the gas really quick. This car would run high 11's on 17 inch cobra r wheels with drag radials spinning through 1st and second. I never used slicks because it had a 7.5 rear end. I had an 8.8 but never got around to it. I think the ecoboost uses two low pressure turbos so your really not gonna hear em that well and if you screw around with it they can be very temperamental. That's why I didn't buynone they are expensive. And in my opinion don't last as long over the long run.

I say all this because all I originally wanted was to be able to hear the turbo a little more then everything untouched made me have to address something else. I wouldn't touch an Eco boost with a ten foot pole just drive it if I had it.

My 6.7's turbo sounds nothing like my 7.3 did. My 7.3 would wind up with a load and you could hear it a block away but 6.7 is very soft
