Default Re-evaluatiing 5.0 purchase...

My 5.0 runs flawlessly so far (20,000 miles), and my friends Eco also runs well with no problems of any kind so far (!6,000 miles).

I was never overly impressed with how much more performance his Eco delivered than my 5.0, although there is a slight low-end power improvement.
I attributed that solely to the Eco engine alone.

I recently discovered that he has 3.73 gears, while mine has 3.55s. That would clearlt help him out even more.

I also found out that the entire Eco "pkg" (engine, turbos, CAC, tubing, related hardware, etc...) actually weighs more in total than the 5.0 engine and its related stuff.

My question is this:

How close to the maximum output/ performance is the Eco set-up from the factory? How much potential is there for the aftermarket guys?

I know the 5.0 has a lot of room and potential to improve, both internally and aftermarket.

I have had my "shoulda' bought the Eco" moments, but I always come back to being glad I got the 5.0.

The way I see it, the 5.0 and EB have close numbers. However, the scale of RPMs where you get those numbers is the biggest difference, as EB produces lower in the RPM range.

The EB already has a lot unleashed via a tuner. Companies are slowly getting downpipes and exhausts made that will free up a little more power. Short of different turbos, single turbo, there isn't a lot more out there. Experts what stated that the EB bottom end is built to handle a lot more power.

There are a lot more options for the 5.0 right now. Looking at Ford's projected future in engines, I think that will change over the next 10 yrs.

I change my 5.0 2011 buy in 2010 for a ecoboost FX4 and for sure the sound
of the 5.0 are a lot better .But I tow 5 or 6 days a week and for sure the eco
have more power. i tune my eco and damn it s not caparable to 5.0.
For sure my eco take more gaz with a trailer but you don t feel the trailer behind. you can make more modification to the eco .but the sounds is crap.
Thats my opinion.
Sorry for the mistake i am French guy from montreal :o)

Add a blower to your 5.0 and you won't have any more doubts.

There is no right or wrong to either engine. A good place to start is here http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/...n/viewall.html I know the test is of 2011s but is probably the best comparison I've found.

it seems Livernois in particular is really squeezin the mustard out of the EB's in other vehicles like the flex and sho. cant see why F150 couldnt see similar gains. as for the longevity of these engines at that power level? that is a whole other story of which I dont think many have heard yet.

Long term you 5.0 should be more trouble free and require less maintenance. Really depends what you use your truck for. I don't know of any factory boosted engine that with tuning, bigger injectors, and other slight mods can't do 50 to 100 HP more. To get that result of the 5.0 your will have to at least throw a blower on it for considerably more expense than modding the Eco boost. However, once you go the route of these mods you will start to run into long term reliability issues. Boosted engines have a lot of potential for power and wallet destruction.

One costs $600 and the other costs $9000. Briefly looking at the dyno #s I'd have to say I have some doubt. They say the torque gets your there, hp will keep you there. Both motors in 6000lb trucks would definitely be a nice race to see

So you compare a blown 5.0 with a crappy tune (but with a warranty) to a well tuned EB? And remember, it may not be $8,000 more but the EB does cost more up front. Try looking up the dyno runs with a JLP tune, it may remove a bit of your doubt.

In the end, how much do you want to spend? Then we can figure out how fast you can go...

I guess I am. Seeing you and I bought trucks to not certainly be race car drivers in them LOL. the OP worded it as "just bolt on a supercharger", so I'm assuming you will do it at the dealer as the ecoboost truck comes from. There is what a $1500 difference in comparable trucks from the dealer? JPC Racing does the tuning for my 5.0 but thanks. So lets say $7000 difference even $4000 difference do you think the ecoboost motor could be competitive in that budget? Just my opinion man, like I said I would love to see what a roushcharged f150 in a 6000lb truck would do. I would think we could easily see that happen before an ecoboost "$600 tuned motor in a RCSB..agree??
