You're right. I'm sure oil has come a long ways, and I am certainly a believer in synthetic oils/lubes. I'm coming up on the first oil change for my new truck and have already purchased a case of Motorcraft full syn and a filters. I was pleased when I did that little test on some of the Motorcraft oil, and after cooling the bottom of the can was clean, and the oil appeared no different than when I started.
Try that little test with some of the modern synthetic oils....just for fun. It's surprising what you will find. I did it with Mobil 1 and Castrol full syn....boiled both for a couple of minutes, let them cool, and there was all kinds of "junk" at the bottom of the Castrol can. The Mobil 1 can's bottom was nice and clean. Just from that little experiment, I will never put Castrol oils in any of my vehicles.

I agree with liking Mobil 1. I changed to it several years ago, and have had very good luck with it in all three of our vehicle (02 Toyota RAV4, 77 F150, and my previous Toyota pickup). For the new truck I'm gona go with Motorcraft full syn....at least until the warranty is up. I did that little test to the Motorcraft oil just to see how it compared to Mobil 1. The results looked good!

Okay.........I just torched some Quaker State 5W-20 Syn..........not very exciting......just alot of smoke.....and awful smell....nothing else....no residue..nothing but stink and smoke......so does that mean QS is just as good as Mobil 1, because it pasted the fire test??????

I believe Quaker State is now owned by Shell Oil Products US. Look at the bottle next time you're at the Walmart or the auto parts store - somewhere, in the fine print it will say SOPUS.
Shell also owns Pennzoil as well; Same thing, look for the SOPUS on the bottle.
Take the time to download the product data sheets from Mobil and Motorcraft. I recently did and compared the full synthetic 5w-30 oils and the MC has a higher flash point and lower pour point than the M1. The difference is marginal at best, but I had no problem switching from M1 to MC for my truck.
In my Mazdaspeed3 I ran Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 because it carries the HTO-06 Acura/Honda turbo rating (which isn't easy to meet) and because used oil analysis at bobistheoilguy showed it to hold well to fuel dilution, which is an issue with the MS3 engine. I ran that car for 60k miles and the PP never showed any stress from being in that engine, which is lovingly referred to as "the little volcano".
It is very easy to see into the valve train on the MS3 through the oil fill hole and the PP kept that engine spotless. I actually had someone tell me that I was ruining my engine with that "waxy" Pennzoil in my car, so I took the time to let him gaze into the valve cover; conversation stopped.

I took my moms 74 Torino out for a drive(my parents very first brand new car purchase) an hour later i had it towed home with a blown motor. my dad decided we would rebuild it, so we started the tear down. everything in the motor was caked with sludge. I mean really thick sludge. my dad blamed the blown motor on the oil and not his 16 year old hot rod son. thank god! he never used Quaker state again and neither have I!
