Unless you live in a hot climate or do serious towing I really can't see it being an issue if you add a grille cover over the intercooler. Many other turbo vehicles have grilles over the intercooler and almost every vehicle has a grille over the radiator. Same concept for both, fin type heat exchanger. I'm sure the Ford engineers prefer maximum air flow over it to be conservative for even the most demanding truck owners. Likewise, I honestly think it is very unlikely to sustain catastrophic damage if you leave it uncovered. But one thing is for sure, my truck looks way better with the grille added.
