Oil Life & Oil Changes

I hear what your saying. Nothing wrong with overdoing maintenance, I'm very guilty of that too. If it gives someone peace of mind to change at xxxx miles then that's ok.
Modern motors now can save owners money on service with cleaner designs and better oil systems. I can vary my ecoboost oil life monitor to my 10% mark with usage anywhere from 6000 km to 12000 km depending on my load and conditions. I could get more if I put on more empty highway miles.
That tells me it's working very well, just like my last GM did, and the one before that. This is more than twice the mileage per change than my servicing of my older diesels, which needed the changes earlier due to older designs.
This oil change issue is really a non issue. If someone is fine with changing at 50% then ok, and if you change at 1% then ok too.
I do take issue with so many dealerships insisting a severe duty schedule for all changes simply because of make belief excuses so they can get more of your money. They can contradict Ford, the OLM, the manual, common sense, and my own correspondence with the manufacturers.
So everyone should relax a little and realize it's much more flexible than past practices.

I Like Tires
The reason the oil life monitor does about 10k mile intervals between changes is because these new engines have Independant Oil Coolers. Heat is the number one cause of oil breakdown and if you can keep it cooler you drastically increase the lifespan of the oil.

Eco-5.0-Eco again
Plus, the engine cooling system on the new engines seem to be top notch. I just changed my oil @ 5k and it still had some color left to it. I pretty much change my oil @ 5k in all my vehicles, using full or semi synthetic. I recently tore down and rebuilt my 4.6 in the Mustang and it was clean as a whistle with minimal wear...

dcfluid: I did follow the OLM on all my former GM products with no problems what so ever. Some how I just cant do that with my new EB truck; dare I say it - I love the thing too much to treat it like I would ordinary equipment.
Heavens above, I'm just now realizing I love my EB as much as my Bimmer and my old Mazdaspeed 3 (which I still pine over trading in).
I didn't give a damn about my Chevys, totally expendable.....Just coming to grips that I love a truck! New terrain for me guys, loving a truck, after driving sports cars most of my life....
Waiting for a used oil analysis on a EB to show up on bobistheoilguy in the used oil analysis section to get a feel on how these things are their lubricants.

What I plan on doing for my next oil change is sending a sample to Blackstone Labs. They will analyze your oil and recommend an oil change interval. They can also foresee future problems that might arise. All engines will not be the same. I did find one article, http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=2419399. He changed is oil at 2300 miles for the first time and his numbers didn't look that bad.

Funny you should mention Pennzoil Platinum. When you look at both oils spec sheets and what all manufacturers specs are met, the PP seems like the better oil comared to the (pricier) Pennzoil Ultra. It's crazy actually.
Plan on switching to the PP next oil change - it was great in my Mazdaspeed3.

If I had a EB I personally wouldnt go over 5K due to the turbos and heat related issues. Ive had other turbo vehicles and they tend to be harder on oils due to their nature. Naturally aspirated motors I typically stick to the monitor which is around 7K or so.

Hello,
I have about 3000 miles on my new F150 with Ecoboost and have a question about the frequency of oil changes. Should I change the oil every 5000 miles or should I change the oil when the truck indicates the life of the oil has been exhausted? I ask because it looks like by the time the oil life is at 0%, I will have logged about 11,000 miles. My gut says to go with the 5000 mark but am curious what others go with.
Thanks,
David
