Afternoon everyone.
Recently purchased my 2012 F -150 King Ranch with the 5.0 V8 and I am coming up on my first oil change. Crawling under the truck today the drain plug on the oil pan is easy to get to, no problem. However the oil filter appears to be a little bit of a challenge, not so much removing it, but trying to keep from making a huge mess with oil running everywhere.
My question, it appears there is a plastic catch pan if you will, under the filter that dumps off right in front of where the lower A-Arm bolts to the frame. It’s really hard to see up in there. If I remove the oil filter slowly and let it drain slowly will this catch pan handle all the oil??
Just hopin one of you have had experience with this.

Can't speak for the 5.0 but that plastic piece your are speaking of does nothing on my EcoBoost. The oil drains straight down through the square hole in the skid plate. I can't figure out why Ford put that plastic piece there. It is very deceptive on the EcoBoost. I thought maybe it works with the 5.0. Maybe someone who has done a 5.0 will chime in.

I haven't looked at my eco yet, but remember on my 5.4l raptor that the plastic piece was too far away from the oil filter and didn't catch the oil either, it ended up going straight down to the skip plate like above poster mentions. This was on a level garage floor.

Why do they make them this way? I mean, don't they test it out?

They probably make them that way so you'll give up and take it to the dealer.

The tray does very little, but the oil coming from the filter doesn't make much of a mess; it all seemed to drain in one general area. I pop the oil plug in again, move the drain pan under the a-arm in the area of the filter, twist it off and just try to keep from dropping the filter. I didn't even really notice the little drain groove until I was cleaning up the spilled oil; it definitely didn't drain down that groove when I pulled the filter off. I did this with the front end jacked up slightly so that I could get right under there. With the truck sitting level it might drain off the groove a little better but as long as you have a decent sized drain pan in place its not an issue anyway; I didn't have much to clean up when I finished.

Assuming the 2012 is the same as the 2011, the 5.0 has a catch piece under the oil filter that will dump it down in two places -- one in front by where the filter is and one towards the back. I use a long oil drain pan lined up just right to catch them both.

thats how ford is, they put a little catch pan in there that is useless. I change oil all day long, just get a rag and some brake cleaner and it will clean right up!

Thanks for the responses guys.
I spent an hour this morning out under the truck just checkin things out.
I was able to get my hand under the filter to feel just how far the plastic catch pan goes. It goes a couple of inches forward of the filter and the housing it attaches to. It feels like it has a ½ inch to 1 inch lip all the way around to contain the oil, and then of course the drain channel in front of the pan. I was not able to detect any drain hole in the plastic pan. I’m thinkin that keeping the truck level and SLOWLY REMOVING THE FILTER will get the oil out through the drain channel and into my container on the floor.
Again, thanks for the responses. Maybe FORD changed the plastic catch pan for 2012??

I found that with the truck level, oil came out of the front spout and rear spout of the little catch pan. If the front is up on ramps then it all goes out of the back spout. You will find the rear spout the first time you change the oil, it is tucked up in there and hard to see. Just be ready for it. I wasn't. Or put it up on ramps and pour a glass of water up there so you can see where it comes out.

Thanks for the heads up. Excellent suggestion to pour a little water into the little pan. As I metioned earlier, I wasn't able to find the rear spout by feeling with my fingers but from your experience I believe you!! I will test with water and make sure I have a big enough catch container underneath when I do change my oil.
