Odometer question
So I am sure that there is an obvious answer and that I am experiencing a brain spasm, but here is my question.
I was driving home today and I flipped between my two trip odometers and noticed the sum of those two numbers was greater than the total mileage on the main odometer. Trip 1 is 8250 and and Trip 2 is 1823. The total mileage is 9860. That seems like it should not be possible, so what I am missing

Because they are both always adding up at the same time. So say your truck is at 10k miles. You have never reset Trip B so it also says 10k miles. But you reset Trip A when your truck was at 4500 miles. Now your trip A says 5500 miles and Trip B says 10k miles.

Or look at it this way. If you had never reset your trip, an your truck was at 10k miles. Both of your Trips would read 10k miles, added together being double the mileage your truck actually has. Basically adding them together can't get you your trucks mileage.
