I use it for both a car on a daily 70 mile commute which explains why I get 20-21 mpg and a truck to tow 8500 lbs of fifth wheel which explains why my lifetime mpg is about 18.

I tow my 5k pound enclosed trailer at least a third of my mileage...plus lots of shooting and hunting well off the beaten path...a car wouldn't dream of being able to go where I go regularly in my truck

just a tad under 17MPG with all city driving however only 1 kilometres on the clock.... not even 2 tanks of gas, plenty of breaking in to do. 2012 Screw 4x4 5.5 foot bed.

Its good for Ford that so many buy a truck when all they really need is an economy car and a small utility trailer for the few trips they make a year to the home improvement store.
Wow....interesting comment! You must be an Obama voter! No doubt my lifetime economy would be terrible if I just left my trailer hooked up everywhere I went! I bought a multi purpose vehicle as I'm sure the majority of the folks here did. Let us know how that economy car works out for you....I'll keep my truck!

Thank you! With a 20.3 mpg lifetime average at 18000 miles, I'm sure he's directing his comment towards me and those like me. I do use my truck for the work commute 90% of the time. However, when I want to carry 6 people once or twice a month, I can do that. When I want to tow my 4500 lb boat once a month, I can do that. When I want tow my Dad's 50 hp John Deere, I can do that. When I want to run a 13 second quarter mile, I can do that. And finally, when I want to get 24 mpg on a family vacation, I can do that too.

If there is another vehicle out there that can do all that, I'd like to hear about it but it sure isn't an econobox with a utility trailer.

70 responses and the average is 17.8. Sounds like there may be something to these EPA ratings...

Truck: 2012 FX4 crew cab, 5.5' bed, 3.73 e-lock. 6k miles on the clock. I have a daily commute of about 50 miles all highway at speeds about 60-70. Pull an all steel flatbed dove tail car hauler and handful of times loaded and unloaded. Does a fair mix of city/highway on the weekends.

Lifetime average is 17.5, and rising steadily. towing mileage is pretty consistently about 15, and in the city I am dropping to a bout 16.6 most times. Every time I have hand calc'd to check the on board computer it is only about .1-.2 over. I try to fill up at half a tank on Monday mornings, right before the commute.

driving styles is pretty normal, don't need to be the first to the next red light but I am also not holding up traffic. Usually try to coast a bit into stops, especially at lights I know the change pattern on so I keep the need to accelerate from a stop at a minimum. Definitely not a hyper-miler' but I do love the truck, and am happy with the MPG's/performance/quality.

I am getting 15.9 so far at about 9K on the odometer. But, I drive my truck like I drove my BMW convertible. And, about 20% of my miles have been driven towing a 5,000 lb RV trailer plus probably about another 1,000 lbs in cargo and passengers. So, I never expected MPG anywhere near the upper limit that was shown on the window sticker.

I can't complain. I haven't tried at all to do anything to improve the gas mileage. I am told that I have to get a bit more on the odometer and I should see better MPG. I don't know if that is just myth or if there is any truth in the engine needing to sufficiently break in for improved MPG. Either way, I am fine with whatever MPG it ends up at since I didn't buy this truck for MPG but rather to tow my RV and do other things that I couldn't accomplish without a truck.

I must admit that sometimes makes me a bit anxious filling the 36 gallon tank and hitting the $99.00 limit on some of the gas pumps. I never had that happen before until now. LOL

I quoted non-towing mpg. I think that's only fair. EPA ratings are not based on towing. And then your mileage will vary significantly depending on how much you tow.

BUT, you are right about the car and utility trailer; totally.
