Default my ecoboost towing experience.....

I just got back from a hunting trip in Kansas where I pulled our 31 foot camper about 700 miles. I couldn't be any happier with the truck. I had a 15-20mph side wind from Ft. Smith AR to OK City which turned into a tail wind to Salina KS. I drove 65-70 the whole way with the truck in tow/haul mode and averaged 8.5 MPG for the total trip. It handled the camper and my truck loaded like a champ. It was about 8,000 lbs total for both. It dropped down into 4th gear less than 10 times on the entire trip and had plenty of extra power to get around slower vehicles. The truck did exactly what I wanted it to and I have no complaints .......My truck is an FX4 screw with 3.73 gears totally stock.

I made the opposite pull last year with an 05 fx4 screw with 305/65 bfg a/t and a edge evolution programmer and averaged about 8mpg. There was a LOT more down shifting with the 05. Definitely glad I made the switch.

Ok, you pulled a 31' camper and I pulled a 7k excavator. I got 7mpg at 60 and you got at 8.5 65-70? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the informative post.

I recently towed 2300 miles round-trip from NJ to Florida. I don't know the weight of the trailer but it was a 16 foot 1999 vintage Wells Cargo tandem axle. I got the impression that is is pretty heavy for it's size, just looking at the way it is built, and it is tall and square in the front. I was loaded with approx. 2200 #'s in the trailer. My truck has the 3.73 gears.

I averaged around 10.5 mpg on the trip down at 70 - 75 mph. On the way back I experimented running at different speeds and I found that if I kept the speed under 65 mph I could pick up over 1.5 mpg. Over the last 600 miles at around an average of 62 mph or so the truck got 12.3 mpg. It seemed as though that was the "sweet" spot for mileage. I didn't really enjoy moving that slow, but the extra miles on a tank is great.

Not sure man....I even had the cruise set 95% of the time which I heard is worse. I did use high octane gas...that and the tow/haul mode is the only thing I did different than regular driving.

I didn't expect to get much if any better when towing, but I don't tow anything that big very often and I get a lot better MPG in every day driving....

Ok, that's what I've heard. The Eco is a good daily driver and an ok tower, for mpg.
