This has been my experience as well with the 5.0. Though my truck only has about 1200 miles on it so it's not really broken in yet.

My boss has a 2013 4wd supercab with the 3.7 he bought new. It's a nice looking truck, Kodiak Brown metallic. He's got it up for sale. He swears he gets 15 mpg. Admittedly, he's not going to get good mileage in anything, he drives 80 plus on the interstate. But the fact that the V6 is capable of getting that low mileage (I saw 15.2 on the dash readout) and the fact that he's having a heck of a time selling it, I'd personally pass on the NA V6. That's just me, though. I'd rather have the V8 or the turbo engine. If I didn't trust the reliability of those, I think I'd choose another brand.
I do agree the 5.0 is prone to knocking. My 2013 did, traded it for my wife a new Toyota. So I'm on the fence on what I'll buy next. If I'm spending a fair amount of money, I'm personally not interested in the NA V6. Lower resale, and I don't think the fuel mileage is earth shattering.

36k miles on my 5.0 with no problems. I stomp the throttle almost everywhere I go. Most of my driving is in the city and I always average 15.8-16 MPG.

I have a 3.7, it's a great engine. The mileage will be about 10% better all else being equal. We have a 5.0 that I have used from work, and as much as the EPA is a little bit out to lunch, they are usually pretty accurate for comparison for similar configurations.

Overall, I average 22 MPG(US) with my 2014 STX Scab 5.0 2 wheel drive, driving it easy (no jack rabbit starts, 65 mph on the freeway etc)
Pulling a 8.5 x 16 trailer, I get 12 MPG(US) on average.

This is my last (mostly) hwy trip. This driving was done in the high desert, so 5500 ft. or so. About 350 of it was ~75mph, beginning at 5500 ft, over the Continental Divide at ~8000 ft or so, then back over the same route. Maybe 10% city driving. My hand calculation matched the computer almost exactly.
