Don't forget about the increased maintenance costs on the diesel vs the small displacement Ecoboost, not to mention the smell in your garage, the additional cost of diesel over gas (although this gap is narrowing), and the extra $$$ for the diesel in the first place. I've seen cost comparisons over several years, and the additional mpg's don't always equate to overall savings.

on a hopeful note I swapped all the spark plugs tonight, installed my stock intake and put in a new filter. I also swapped the tune with the 5star mileage tune. The truck idles perfectly again ( the small miss at idle is 100% gone ) and the truck actually runs and accelerates fine with the eco tune on there. I can tell it's lacking a little in the power department but it's not nearly as bad as I expected, . The truck is still completely drivable and has plenty of power for what I need. I just walked in the door from topping off my tank and resetting the odometer so we'll see what kind of mileage I get after I go through this tank. I'll post my results in about a week. I really appreciate all the help and suggestions.. If I end up averaging over 17mpg I will consider this a win.

Note to everyone. Don't change plugs on a fully warmed up engine on a 90+ degree day. I drove home, parked it and instantly started swapping plugs. I was dripping sweat from my face onto the motor because of how hot it was. I was not about to wait for it to cool down, I was too impatient to get everything done. LOL.

I'll sell my AFE stage 2 dry intake w/ filter for $275 shipped if anyone is interested.. Only has 400 miles on it.

How did the old plugs look and what was the gap? I understand that you need to idle a lot, but remember that when you do it gets 0 mpg and will get 0 mpg no matter what you do to the truck. A diesel also gets 0 mpg when idling so your friend may spend less percent at idle than you do.
For driving, I have found that an 87 tune with premium gas seems to get the best results. It is probably not cost justified but it is more satisfying. The driving I do in this rural area allows for regular use of cruise control too and that seems to help as well.

A gallon of diesel has a lot more energy than a gallon of gas. And, a diesel will use less fuel idling than a gas engine will, like half as much. If it was me, I'd sell the tuner too, and learn how to drive for mpg. The ecoboost is the only car or truck we've ever had where I get better mpg than my wife does. I think it's the low rpm thing, I don't get on the throttle at low rpm and I always roll into the throttle like I'm driving a diesel truck with huge injectors.

As an $8700 option, you could never cost justify the diesel based on economy. But if you need one to pull the load, then you need it.
It is something I would consider if I ever wanted a heavier fifth wheel or did full-time RV.
