I think you can improve fuel mileage on a 5.0 by adjusting the shift points of the transmission. The faster you can get to a higher gear - the better. When I just got the truck I wasn't familiar with the 6-speed auto and the steering column shifter. I used '3' as driving mode thinking it was limiting the truck to the first 3 gears The truck would shudder from the start but then pick up speed very fast. Of course later I realized I was starting in Gear 3 so I stopped doing that. But I'm trying to say is that if this truck can START in Gear 3, you can take advantage of the engine's power to shift faster. Here's what I did yesterday... Shifting points compared to stock:
1 to 2 MINUS 300 RPM;
2 to 3 MINUS 200 RPM;
3 to 4 PLUS 200 RPM;
4 to 5 PLUS 200 RPM;
5 to 6 PLUS 300 RPM.
The truck now flies and I hardly touch gas when accelerating from stop. This definitely saves gas in city driving.

I have 3 of mikes tunes. I am not entirely happy with them yet.
I use his 91 tunes. His 91 Performance tune has a weird shifting pattern where the 1-2, 4-5, and 5-6 shift happen too soon and the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts take too long. Also the spring throttle is way to agressive and the first few drives you will almost rear end people because when you give the petal 20% the throttle will open 60ish%. It makes the truck jump.
I recently asked him to make me a 91 economy tune. The shifting is just about spot on at part throttle and the spring throttle is gone. It still feels just as powerful but shifts too early at WOT, 5700rpm when I specifically asked for the same shifting at WOT as the performance tune.
I will be calling him next week.

When I had 5 Star tunes with the SCT tuner, I had the same problem - there was too much throttle in Gear 1 and 2. I felt the truck was burning more gas because of it. That's why I like the simplicity of the Hypertech I have now: when I don't like the shift points I just hook up the tuner and correct them myself. No need to call anyone
