I used this pic from the mpg thread cause I didn't have one that shows the gears so sorry to who ever pic this is.
I will do that, I haven't had time to go to the dealer yet, so I will try this and post back. Maybe it's in my head, but I have noticed that when that noise occurs, the RPM's seem lower than normal. However, I have tried putting it in manual mode when this has happened, and the sound still seems to occur, even with me making sure to shift a little higher than usual. Anyways, I'll record a new video in a bit and post back.

Any information on changing spark plugs on the 3.7? Easy or hard to do? I have 2002 5.4 now, so some of y'all know why I'm asking about plug changing - I want something easier to do.

Thanks to Murphy's law, I couldn't get the symptoms to occur today; the truck was accelerating better than ever, even with me purposefully driving harder than usual and making the truck downshift on multiple occasions (I can usually get the symptoms by doing this). I did put in manual mode and noticed that when I purposefully up-shifted really early, that the truck sounded like it was struggling a little, obviously, but not as harsh as in the previous video (and the acceleration was still smooth, given the low RPM's). Can this be some sort of of computer glitch or something?

This is my 1st post. I Purchased a 3.7 F150 SuperCab 4x4 Limited Slip 235 tires and now is 8000k (5000 miles). Did my 1st road trip 688.5k (428m) over 2 days of driving. average consumption 10.58L/100 or 22.22 US MPG The display read 22.2 so I would say pretty close. The driving average was 110kph (68mph). The outside temp was about 65 except for the last 30 minutes of the trip which was close to 80 moving away from the great lakes influence. I could see the improvement in mpg. The reason for the purchase of the 3.7 is that I put on 50,000km (30,000 Mi) 90% highway yearly. The previous truck was a 2001 Chev 4x4 5.3 @440,000km. The same run, it would get 17mpg US.

For anyone with a similar problem, it turned out to be a problem with the mass air flow sensor. I just got it fixed, and after driving it for just a while, it seems much more responsive than before (and never did the strange sound/hesitation as seen in the video).

Here's my review/report of the 3.7L engine after a few weeks with it. Note that it's still not fully broken in yet.

Fuel Economy:

This is why I bought the truck. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles. In two weeks I'm already at 1500 miles.

I've done mostly city driving (some of it freeway) on the new truck (4x2 Scab 3.7L), I can report the following:

Avg. MPG: 20.4

That's not bad for city driving, with an even mixture of freeway (but some of that stop and go), and city streets. Of course, I have to avoid mashing the pedal on stoplight starts. That's the key to getting economy out of this engine. Once the RPM goes above 3500 or so... forget it, she'll suck down as much gas as a V8. The scream at 7000 RPM can be fun, but avoid it if you want to save money.

For clear, level freeway driving, it'll get 23-24 MPG if there's no real wind and you keep it below 70. A little wind behind you and holding at 60-65mph and she'll go above 25. If you're fighting the wind, it can get as low as 21. Above 75 mph, forget it, you might as well be driving a brick for all the economy you'll get.

Performance

My thoughts on performance are mixed. It's a fast truck. I've personally recorded 0-60 times, on level ground, under 8 seconds (7.6 or so). That's very impressive in a base V6 Supercab. This is basically a V6 Mustang with a bed on it. But the performance typically doesn't really come into play until around 3000 RPM, so even though it's respectably fast, it doesn't feel as fast as it actually is. But the stopwatch doesn't lie -- she's got power, it just feels very different from your average truck engine. It won't floor you to the back of your seat, but it's not gutless either.

Hauling things in the bed is no problem. I've had 1200-1300 lbs of crap in the bed and not even noticed. Going uphill with a full load (on what hills exist in Florida) is no problem at all. Passing on the freeway is a cinch, she'll respond quickly, even at 75 - 80 mph, to dropping the hammer.

Towing is where she starts to hurt a bit. Even towing a 3500lb trailer and boat, you can feel the engine working a bit on the hills. She'll do the job, but all that speed and power seems to vanish and the truck becomes merely adequate for the job. This is the transmission helping things along with VERY well adapted shifting. The tranny really maximizes the powerband of this engine, but if you're looking to regularly tow anything over 4000lbs or so, you'll want the 5.0L or the Ecoboost.

On the other hand, if you're like me and you won't really be regularly towing things that are all that heavy (I use the bed for most of my work), then unless you really want the bragging rights of having the bigger, faster engines... the 3.7L is a perfect engine choice. You'll save $1000+ when you buy the truck, and save money every time you go to the gas pump... if you don't slam the pedal to the floor at the stoplight. But she still has power when you need it on the freeway, and she'll still tow a decent size load on the occasions you need it. It doesn't feel gutless like the old V6s of yesteryear.

But she's still a V6, and unlike the Ecoboost, there will be times that you'll notice it. It's a way stronger engine than the old 4.2L V6, and I'd rate it as more powerful than the old 4.6L 2V V8 as well, although the characteristics are very different. The old 4.6L 3V V8, though, had it beat, marginally.

One of the best, most informative reviews. I love this engine. Thanks!

Great write up and review.

However the EB is actually smaller than the 3.7L, and all the engines are just as fast stock because of the governor kicking in at 100 mph no matter what engine is in the truck. Unless you meant quicker engines.

You don't have a choice from the factory, and the only way to get rid of it is with a tuner. I believe all truck makes are set around 100 mph.
