Agree with above poster, the midsize trucks( Colorado, Frontier, Tacoma) do not come close in room, and driving comfort, and they don't get any better mileage. I had a 2005 Colorado Crew 5cyl, after a couple years, I could not take the rough ride and poor mpg.(22mpg best highway). Got a 2008 Frontier Ext. Cab SE-V6, nice truck, had a better ride, but was a gas hog and had some nagging problems. My son has a 05 Taco Access cab with a 2.7 I4. Best highway mpg has been 22 and the road noise is bad even with street tires.

Same here, I had a 2005 Canyon 5 cylinder, less gas mileage and power, and a lighter truck to boot than my F150. It seldomly could get the mileage it was supposed to. I had to get a tune and helper springs for the Canyon, it could pull the 4000lb it was supposed to, but looked like hell with rear sagging and transmission downshifting constantly. The tune really did the trick on that truck, but it still wasn't quite as fast as the 3.7 I have now.

On my new 3.7 F150, I don't think it will need a tune. It produces over 300hp, so it must breathe very well right from the factory. I have the 3.73 with limited slip, haven't towed anything yet, but the gas milage is what it advertised. It accelerates great, I turn off the traction control and put it in tow mode and let it rev. I can feel it back off at times when I have it floored, so a tune would make a difference, I think, but it's good right from the factory.

I traded a Nissan Frontier with a 4 cylinder. Obviously I was impressed, but after 5,000 miles, I wish I would have bought a 5.0. Not enough low end torque although the hp is good, it just doesn't pull hard until I get into the high RPM range. As it has to rev high to "go fast" I wonder about the longevity.

Hey Modular, if you have 1 inch taller tires now, how can you quote gas mileage? Your MPH and odometer are off now and you are actually going farther than the odometer shows and faster than the speedo shows.. Can you get that fixed with a computer flash?

Bought my 3.7L XLT SCREW in Feb. 2011. A first I struggled with the sound of the engine, as I have always had V8's. I have since gotten used to the sound, but as others have stated will probably go with a V8 next time. Out of the box the mileage sucked, but as the engne built up miles (6900 now) the mileage has improved. The engine seems to be tough, and revs easily. Moves the big old truck very well. I did the first oil change at 3000 miles, and since the oil is dead on the mark with no usage at all. Overall it has been doing a great job, and expect it will continue. I don't tow, only haul things that come from the Home Depot, and the most offroading I do is into the Starbuck's parking lot. Sorry, I can't comment on this, it's mostly a grocery getter. Crazy to have a smallish approx. 200 cu. in. engine with 302 hp, and 273 lbs. of torque. I'm a little older than most on the forum, and remember when the big block 454's only had a little over 200 hp. in the 1970's. My how technology has changed things. My first Ford was a 1979 F250, then a '86 Lariat, a '97 150, and a '04 Lightning. I will say that this is the nicest F150 I have owned.

You are correct, the speedo is off by about 3%. The new wheels have been on for less than a week. I can say that as soon as I put them on the dash readout dropped from 16mpg to where it is now at 15.6. You are also correct that this will be corrected by the SCT3. Even though the revs-per-mile are user adjustable with the tuner Mike was nice enough to ask the new tire size and set it up before he shipped it. The SCT3 is a very nice unit. I currently have an SCT2 I am using on our '07 Focus I got from Focus Sport. It has the same feature. The intake and tune will both be installed over the holiday weekend. I will start with the 87 octane performance tune that Mike says is worth about 15-20 hp/tq.

Nice review of your experiences, technology has for sure come a long way! My cousin's 1992 F150 with a 5.0L V8 only made 185 horse power and 270 foot pounds of torque from the factory

I upgraded from an 03 ranger v6 so I am super happy with the new truck. Mileage is good, power is good. Havent towed anything yet but I plan on towing a jeep a couple of times a year so we'll see how that goes. I plan on probably a tune, cai, and exhaust at some point.

How are they for power in real world? Hows the mileage on them? Anyone worked one hard or pulled something decent with one? Any modded engines out there? If so what did you do? Lets get some info going on these 7000rpm screamers!

This guy on youtube claims to have a fastest time of 14.9s with nothing but a Five star tune. I don't exactly know what type of truck configuration he has
just take a look at his videos.

Anyone have a 3.7L 4x4? The dealership where I bought my truck has a 3.7L 4x4 Scab 3.73 and they cannot seem to sell it, been there for over 6 months now, are they really that unpopular?

It's because most people who purchase the 3.7L V6 are concerned about MPG, so they stick with 2WD as well. If you don't care about MPG, you would get a 4WD, and along with that, a 5.0L V8.
