Urea exhaust after treatment is supposed to start bringing the MPG back up since the engine can run dirtier and not as much fuel has to be burned for no reason in the DPF filter

I can average 13 city/highway. When my wife was driving it 1.5 miles to the park and ride it killed my average, it was as low as 8.6! Those short drives are horrid on mpg.

Fair enough. I guess time will tell if MPG's improve , but the owners of urea equipped trucks still have to absorb the cost of refilling the urea unit. Not to mention the increase in the cost of the truck to pay for the technology of the urea system etc.

Diesel emission controls just suck - yes the urea is supposed to help bring fuel economy back up since it wont have to regen as much.
But it adds even more cost to the vehicle, and yet another breakdown item. And like all other DIESEL emission controls, if the control is removed or broken, EPA requires that the vehicle computer de-rate the vehicle. If you run out of DEF, then EPA wants the vehicle to be shut down to IDLE speed. Absolutely stupid.
