5.0 oil change question
OK, so I hit 5,000 miles last night. Planning on doing an oil change this weekend but I have a question. Is there a crush washer on the drain plug? My nissan had one, my wife's last three vehicles had them so if I had to guess I'd guess there is but I havent had a Ford since '97 and I didnt do my own oil changes then.
Planning on a Napa Gold filter, havent decided on oil yet...I've used mostly Mobil1 on recent vehicles...
Already know I need a bigger drain pan...my Nissan took 5-3/8 qt and almost filled the one I have now. (need to figure out whether any of the filter wrenches I have will work too).

Replace the drain plug with a Fumoto/Quickvalve, so your next change will be soo much easier and less messy! Here is the one you need!

Does the Fumoto not worry anyone besides me? Would it be possible for road debris to fly up and knock it open? I guess I need to see one in person to see how it works. Just changed the oil today and removing the drain plug is not that big of a deal to me. The bigger pain is the crappy design of the skid plate/shield and how oil drips and runs all over it !

You could just put a rubber plug and hose clamp on the end of the nipple. If it gets opened the oil wouldn't get past the plug! I just get a 2" piece of hose and silcone the end shut and hose clamp it over the nipple that also keeps out dust ect!

did you not click the video on the right of the page? If you've got road debris big enough to knock that thing open then you've got bigger problems. As far as dripping on the skid plate get the version with the nipple end and slide a piece of tubing on before draining.
I did....still for me it's not worth the risk, as small as it may be, to save the 15 seconds to remove the drain plug. It's not that hard to remove and avoid getting oil on your hand. The site for the fumoto says that if you run over any road debris that you should pull over and check for damage to the valve. I would probably pull over and check regardless but
I would worry a little less with a standard bolt. Too each his own and I am glad they are working for the people that have them.
Now I may try to find one that will work on my boat which has a capped hose coming from the oil pan (no clearance between the oil pan and bilge
to get a wrench in there).
