I know this thread is over 2 years old but l have a 2012 XLT Supercab with 3.73 gears and the 3.7 v6. I have just over 80,000kms (50,000 miles) on the truck and my long term average fuel economy is 19.2 mpg (US gallon). Now that includes every tank no matter the season, or the traffic. I do about 70% freeway, and the rest city driving. I've had a high of 23mpg which was about 90% highway driving, and a low 17mpg when stuck in traffic in traffic in winter. I haven't had the chance to do a long distance highway trip yep unfortunately, but l estimate that l can beat the 23mpg that l have so far achieved. Hope this helps anyone out there that is thinking about purchasing the 3.7 from the previous generation F-150.

Listen to this guy! And......rapid acceleration doesn't really make a whole lot of difference mileage-wise, at city speeds anyhow. Choppy driving and using the brakes does. One the city block where my parents live, there are 2 stop signs before there house. WOT and a partial coast down, nets the same consumption as mild acceleration and typical braking.........

Must be nice, my 2014 STX Sport 3.7/3.73/Supercab averages 15mpg highway and 17-18mpg city.

Everyone I know with a 5.0 is getting 3-5mpg better than me on the highway, and I myself got better with my last three V8 trucks.

Well something is wrong with your truck! That is ridiculously bad, but if you have bad driving habit's, it is possible you are the cause as well.,,,,

I doubt its me, as I said, I got significantly better fuel economy with my last three V8 trucks, and one of those was carbureted.

Its my commute... partly.

Drove up to Waco on I35 last night and back home, and picked up 1 full mpg averaged over a tank that already had nearly 300 miles on it. To go from 15.9 to 16.9 at the same speeds over 70 miles... I had to be averaging 20mpg or more for that run. Apparently my truck hates US190 more than I do!

wow 15MPG highway is terrible... I agree with the other poster, either your driving habbits are terrible. Driving way to fast, or there is something wrong with your truck....

My stock, other then a tune, and drop in air filter, 3.7, Supercab, 4x4, with 3.73 lifetime avg is around 20-21. If i am babying the truck, i have seen it as high as 26 with little to no stopping going around 80KPH....running 87 octane on performance tune.

It's taken me 11 months to figure out that it's my commute.

It's all highway, but after driving a similar distance at similar speeds and picking up 4mpg when heading somewhere else twice in the last few weeks, I looked at a topographical map of the area.

It's slight, slight enough that you don't really notice it, but my entire commute to work is uphill except for one big downhill stretch. You'd think it'd balance out a little going back home, but that big downhill becomes a big uphill going back.

So driving from home to work and back I get 15-17mpg no matter how slowly I drive (can get 18-18.5 if I run Sunoco and REALLY baby it).

But if I drive down to Austin, I get 17-19mpg, and if I drive up to Waco, I kid you not, I got the advertised 23mpg on a fresh fill-up the other day for the first time since I bought the damned thing! (Pulled into a gas station and verified the lie-o-meter's information was correct, it was off by .1)

It still sucks, because my V8 Ram could still get 18-20mpg on my commute, but at least I've finally figured it out. I'm guessing the 3.7 just works way too hard (even though it has more hp and as much torque as my old 4.7 Ram had) going uphill for 20 miles every day. Guess I should have bought a 5.0.
