Engine comparisons (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota)
In the discussion on mpg’s for the ecoboost, I noticed something interesting about Ford’s strategy. If this has been discussed, mods feel free to delete.
Ford basically has three engine choices for most of the masses (I’m excluding the 6.2 since most of the products are specialized, reeeally expensive, or in the HD class). They are the base 3.7 v6, 5.0 v8, and the ecoboost 3.5 v6. If I have read correctly, Ford is pairing these engines to the base v6’s, small v8’s and the upgraded, larger v8. Here is how they stack up in the 4x2 configuration.
Base v6:
Ford
3.7 v6
302 HP at 6500
278 lbs of torque at 4000
17/23 mpg
Chevy
4.3 v6
195 HP at 4600
260 lbs of torque at 2800
15/20 mpg
Dodge
3.7 v6
210 HP at 5200
235 lbs of torque at 4000
14/20 mpg
Toyota
4.0 v6
270 HP 5600
278 lbs of torque at 4400
16/20 mpg
Base v8:
Ford
5.0 v8
360 HP at 5500
380 lbs of torque at 4250
15/21 mpg
Chevy
4.8 v8
302 HP at 5600
305 lbs of torque at 4600
14/19 mpg
Dodge
4.7 v8
302 HP at 5650
329 lbs of torque at 3950
14/19 mpg
Toyota
4.6 v8
310 HP 5600
327 lbs of torque at 3400
15/20 mpg
Upgraded v8 (includes ecoboost):
Ford
3.5 v6

420 lbs of torque at 2500
16/22 mpg
Chevy
5.3 v8

338 lbs of torque at 4400
15/21 mpg
Dodge
5.7 v8
390 HP at 5800
407 lbs of torque at 4200
14/20 mpg
Toyota
5.7 v8
381 HP 5600
401 lbs of torque at 3600
14/18 mpg

We have two Titans at work, they pull great. The fuel milage is 12-13 city and 16-17 hwy unloaded 4x4. They have been reliable. The fuel mileage is horrible. They gear them with 3.36 and 2.89 gears. The rpm is 1200 rpm at 70 so one would think the mpg would be better
