I've read several posts here and across the web with people making huge claims for gas mileage, as well as many with claims of poor gas mileage.
Most of them are running 3.55 gears, so they don't apply to me.
I am curious to here from those ONLY with 3.73 gears, stock tires, and how many miles you have on your truck..
My gas mileage is getting WORSE, every tank of gas gets worse than the one before. My first tank of gas I was getting 20-22MPG, now I'm getting 14-16MPG.
I've only used Shell gas, and 87 octane. I've gone back to the dealer, whom told me that there is no recalls or updates for my truck and that the mileage should get better after 10,000 miles as that is the break in time.
What gets me is how the more miles I put on the truck, the wrose the miles get, in their theory, my mileage SHOULD get better the closer to 10,000 miles I get!
I only have about 5,000 miles on my truck at present. they said they will re-calibrate the truck after 10,000 miles IF the MPG's don't get better.
I LOVE this truck, but I traded my '06 Dodge Ram Mega Cab 4x4 w/ 5.7L Hemi with only 17k miles to get this truck, because I obviously rearly drove my Dodge because it only got 11-12MPG, I bought this truck BECAUSE it had the HP/Towing & MPG, but I'm barly getting better MPG's then my old truck, so it's all for nothing..
The lie-o-meter on the dash sayes 16.4 and thats with 9K on the truck same setup as yours. G/f drives it most of the time to work and school and some long trips when she does her clinicals.
My mileage was suffering after about 3500 miles, my tailpipe was full of soot and at 12k one of my cats failed. They replaced the cat and reflashed the PCM due to my complaint about the puh-chew issue while climbing a moderate grade @ 45 mph with the CC on.
After the reflash the puh-chew probem was diminished greatly, my mpg went up by 2.5 - 3 across the board (average) and the tailpipe has cleared up.
I did an experiment last weekend where I drove a route that included some interstate and side roads, taking the same route back and forth. On the way out I reset the mpg meter, drove 70 on the highway and the posted limit on the sides and got 17.3. On the way back I reset the meter and drove back to the starting point at 60 on the highway and posted limits on the sides and got 21.4. I now stick to the right lane and drive 60 all the time. I can afford to drive 70 but the Mr. Crabs in me won't allow it. I'd rather save the gas money and squander it on other durable goods.

I have 3.73's and my story is the same as yours. MPG's getting worse as time goes on. I have 7500 miles on it now. A couple of weeks ago I pulled a 18' utility trailer with two four wheelers on it on a 500 mile trip. The dash meter showed between 4 and 5 mpg with me running 70 mph. I don't think it was far off either as I was stopping for gas every 200 miles. Empty the truck is doing about 14 on the dash now but was at 18 on the dash the day I drove it home. I took it to the dealer last week and they said their computer said it was doing 16 mpg at at 70 mph which is in spec and nothing they can do.
I guess I am one of the lucky ones. '11 FX4 3.73 EB crew purchased in August. I drive about 1000 miles a week on business with very few stops. I also drive under 65mph and use rural roads when possible. The first 10K miles the overall average was 21.5mpg which I thought was fantastic. Then I began towing snowmobiles in a large 8K lb box trailer at 11mpg. I was not unhappy with this milage because three previous trucks (one diesel) gave about the same fuel economy. Winter driving unloaded on business still yeilded 21mpg. With warmer weather the milage has increased a bit and my 400 mile trip Tuesday surprised me...23.7 mpg! Now keep in mind that I concentrate on milage...if I didn't and rushed things by driving 70mph I would expect maybe 20mpg.
Anyway, I also had a code this winter and the dealer replaced the left catalytic converter. I noticed no difference before or after this work although I suspect they reflashed the CPU because I noticed some subtile changes to the display settings and a slightly lower shift point to 6th gear.
I just turned 31K miles. The display says overall average since manufacture is 19.6mpg which includes the 2500 or so miles of heavy towing this winter.
My opinion of the truck is favorable. If you want good milage you really need to concentrate on keeping the instant milage green bar high...let off the gas whenever possible. Stop and go city driving obviously hurts milage and I do very little of this. Rural roads with gentle hills can get you unbelievable milage...like 26mpg on one 60 mile stretch last March.
From what I have read it seems like the 3.73 gears get better milage that the 3.55 diffs. Maybe this is a 4WD thing and it may be different with a 2WD truck.
I had a F250 diesel manual 6-speed, then a '08 & '10 Tundra and now the Ecoboost. It is a great truck and I think I will get another one when I get up near 80K miles this fall. I have always kept records of vehicle cost and this truck is cheaper to operate than any of my previous vehicles. If I had purchased another Tundra (almost did), I would have spent almost $1500 more on gas alone. Tires are a big expense and the Ford came with much better quality tires (Goodyear Wrangler) than the Tundra (BFG). I needed new tires at 30K miles on each Tundra and I think I will get 50K or more on the Ford tires.
I work for a company that is very eco friendly so when I get funny looks for driving a "big truck", I can point to my little Ecoboost badge and reply that I also care about our environment. I do not tell them that the freakin thing will spank almost every other vehicle in the lot! Can you tell that I like it?
I have a Fx4 crew cab 3.73 gears and stock tires and rims and I get a constant 17.8-18.00 on every tank with in town driving and highway combined. I do have to baby the peddle to achieve this.
Mine has 42K miles on it now. The mileage has never really fluctuated much at all. On the highway at 70 mph with no wind it gets 20-21 very consistantly. I have seen as high as 24 over 500 miles trips with a tailwind and as low as 18 with a headwind. Almost every tank is right at 20. My truck is on the highway 90-95% of the time. There will not be a lot of difference between 3.55/3.73 geared trucks.

70.2 K miles averaging 19.4 mpg since new/ 20.1 non towing
14-16 is what i am getting with the same setup. I think the 20" wheels sucks some juice from the truck....It almost makes me want the big 6.2 because they are getting not to far off from us. Yes you get good milage if you drive it like a lil'bitch but who wants to drive a twin turbo v-6 like a girl. Drive it like a man and mpg's go out the window.

You only averaged 46 mph on that 400 mile trip so 23 mpg ain't so great as most wont drive 55 much less 46
I consistently get about 16-16.5 in the city, which is 95% of my driving. The few road trips I have taken it on I saw as high as 19.5 MPG running about 70 MPH from Southwestern Virginia to north central PA. straight through the Appalachian mountains, truck was also full of hunting gear.
The truck is almost 8 months old and has about 3,200 miles on it. My fuel economy was taking a beating about 2 months ago, but after the 12-2-10 reflash it came back up to where it was when new.
