ecoboost turbo failures
#21
I kid you not...we found foundry sand in a core we were going to build. It destroyed the bearing in the drives side. It was red, gritty sand, it looks similar to the match plate casting sand...and the turbos are match plate castings. Crazy, but sometimes it slips by.

My left side turbo failed in my 2012 ecoboost F150. I was 600 miles from home on vacation pulling the 3800lb camper. The only drivability issue was at about 40 to 45 MPH where it had an intermittent miss and hesitation. The codes showed a boost pressure issue and the intake tube had oil in it. This truck has not been driven hard, ever. Got it fixed and drove home okay, but how long before something else goes?? The truck has 22000miles (35000km) on it.

As far as what happened, the compressor wheel separated on my turbo, taking out my cat in the process. Everything is now fixed, I am a happy camper, 100% covered under warranty. Possible bearing failure that led to that?
If it wasn't warranty work it would have cost about $4500 parts and labor.

Good thing it's under warranty. I was lead to believe on these forums that a blown turbo is 400 or 500ish dollars for the part I understand you had a toasted cat too but yeah slightly more then the prices that are getting thrown around here should this type of work be needed outside of warranty. None the less glad it got all fixed for you and you're not out of pocket.

I think something got lost in translation. While the compressor wheel is bolted to the shaft and have separated at times, it can't hurt the cat. The turbine wheel could possibly Hirt the cat, but they're usually one piece with the shaft so they don't separate.
As far as the price goes, nothing surprises me with these dealerships. You could fix it yourself for 4-500 though.
