Ecoboost Running Rich ?
I have a Lariat 4x4, 3:73 rear end, 20 inch tires. Have put abt 5000 miles on it so far, 4000 of that is towing a 6,000 lbs trailer. The tail pipe is sooty black at this point and I suspect it may be running a bit rich. I am used to the more normal white/gray appearance on my other vehicles. Just curious - what are you other EB owners seeing on your trucks?

My wifes 2010 SHO and my 2011 f150 both have soot in the exhaust pipe

I've heard Its because of the direct injection.

Yes, it has everything to do with the fuel injection system. Do a wikipedia search for "gasoline direct injection" to better understand what is happening here.
To keep it simple, more load on engine = richer mixture. It is slightly more complicated than that, but that should work for those of us who aren't mechanically inclined and those of us who really don't care about how GDI works.

I just got back from a 2000 km trip and I noticed that my truck appears to be "leaning out" a bit. The tailpipe is definitely not as black as it was before. The truck is an August build with 8k km (5k mi) on the odo.
My Audi also has DI and the tailpipe is black, but it uses a bit of oil, and the F150 doesn't.

I have the same problem black soot, and my trucks CEL light came on. I am supposed to have the left side cat replaced this week at the dealer, thats the code it threw. I would stay away from tuners til ford straightens this out. I think people who tow alot are going to have more problems with this than others. I think Ford knows there is a problem and probably has a fix in the works with a new tune themselves. I think changing the CAT on my truck will fix it for awhile but I think its only a bandaid without a new flash. My truck has 6500 miles, probably 4000 of it towing.

My tailpipe is as black as sin and spews out enough to besplatter the front of my travel trailer. Fortunately a little Purple Power on a soft cloth will remove it.
