I had the same thing happen to me this past weekend towing 7500 pounds Is there a fix for this besides buying a new radiator for the truck? Kind of dumb that you would have to buy a new part to make the truck work how Ford advertises it.

More info would be nice.

Truck year, miles, mods, outside temps, hill grade, etc.

5* 91 tow tune 2014 fx4 62K miles 75 degrees 5% grade got the reduced engine power on the screen. I think it is the 170 tstat I put in, the reason I think that is even running stock programming on a 70 degree morning I can get my temps up to 225 and no trailer...

The 2011 F-150 brochure Max Tow option includes an "upgraded radiator". Here's the text:

Max. Trailer Tow Package (Regular Cab and SuperCab; restrictions apply; required
for towing over 5,000 lbs.) includes Class IV trailer hitch receiver, 7-pin wiring harness,
upgraded radiator, auxiliary transmission oil cooler, trailer brake controller, upgraded
rear bumper, SelectShift Automatic transmission, and manual telescoping/folding trailer
tow mirrors with manual glass or manual telescoping/folding trailer tow mirrors with
power/heated glass, integrated turn signal indicators and security approach lamps

It's a common belief that running a cooler thermostat will provide a cooling enhancement benefiting performance. This isn't always the case.

I've come across instances were using a cooler thermostat actually makes cooling worse, running higher than normal temperatures.

Running a thermostat that's too low in opening temperature can result in a condition where the thermostat once open, the engine is able to generate enough heat or in combination with high ambient temperatures, the thermostat never closes.

When an engine is being worked hard, considerable heat is generated with coolant going through the engine, if the water doesn't spend enough time suspended in the radiator, its possible that its not cooled enough before its pulled back into the engine. The result is that warmer than anticipated water is being pushed back into the engine where it becomes hotter yet, thus a point of diminishing return. It's like running a cooling system without a thermostat. Allowing the thermostat to cycle open/closed even if the result is a noticed increase of operating temperature, is typically engineered for longevity so the engine can operate under considerable load for long periods and not experience an overheating condition, boiling of coolant.

Now this isn't always the case, but is within the realm of possible, and has occurred on vehicles where a lower thermostat has been used. It's basically the same condition that would be observed if the thermostat is stuck open.

Ok, I am new to the forum. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on what I've done to try and fix the overheating while towing grades ! I installed the full race radiator and intercooler. Helped a little at night still over heats in high ambient day time temps. Even in stock tune I have to rely

Helped a little at night still over heats in high ambient day time temps. Even in stock tune I have to keep an eye on my data logger . My tt is right around 9500 lbs. Loaded. 15,500 total. Live in AZ and pull huge grades in hot climates. Truck is a beast but you have to back off up these grades . Funny how everyone doesn't have these issues! I really think we need to retard these engines , while tuned it's even worse from my perspective, this means the timing is to much . Stock, the exhuast shows the richness due to soot , this runs cooler because not so lean . It needs lot less timing up these hills .
Now I'm wondering if a huge open exhuast system is in need .
Also I have 100,850 miles on her.
