For those of you that consistently get great MPGs with the Ecoboost, what are your top 3-5 tips to getting great milage?

My previous vehicle was a Honda civic, so gas milage was never a thought...so I'm new to this.

Before you say "DON'T BUY A TRUCK IF YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT FUEL MILAGE" - It's not that I can't afford gas ok? The idea of consistently getting 21+ on a vehicle of this size with this much HP kinda fascinates me.

This is what I've gathered from my reading so far:

Drive slower (< 70 mph)
Have a feather foot
Watch further up the highway


FYI - my best milage so far was 21.5 on a 50 mile trip (mostly hwy).

My best was 19 but I seem to hover around 17...aggressive tires and a heavy foot = not so good mileage

I have found that by running ethanol free gas I average 21.2 to22.6 mpg

Stay out of the throttle when going uphill and regain the lost speed on the back side of said hill

I drive mostly with cruise control. I get the best mileage that way.

Keep it below 60, don't idle it(0 mpg), synthetic oil, keep it clean and waxed., btw the best ive seen is 23.9mpg over a 130 mile stretch of interstate 5

1. Don't change anything from stock (bigger tires then factory will impact MPG grossly), anything that "catches" the wind....a topper above the roof line, big mud flaps, etc. will impact MPG on these trucks.

2. Keep it UNDER 70mph (above 70 the bottom drops out of my MPGs)

3. Around town, drive it like grandma would.

I've said it in other threads.....I don't think I will ever stop being amazed at how much "little" things impact the MPG on these trucks. What blows my mind is that fact that my truck (Ecoboost) has 365hp in a 6-cyl. and it's MPG is so grossly affected by such minor things. If I could consistently pull 19-20 out of it on the highway, I'd be ecstatic.... but on one trip I will get 14-15, and on another I'll get 18-19....over the same routes, at the same speeds......it's just odd.

I agree with everything everybody else has mentioned. One thing that I did not see involves cruise control on downhill sections. If the cc is set to say 60 mph and you are going downhill, it will downshift the tranny and act as an engine brake to maintain the set speed on downgrades. While this is a good thing at times, it does not allow the vehicle to build up any reserve momentum for the next upgrade. If the vehicle was allowed to increase speed up to a certain "reasonable" point, it would allow a more efficient throttle setting for at least part of the next upgrade.
