Ecoboost mileage w/ 3.15 gear

You guys sound like you know a lot about trucks. We just got a camper trailer (4000 lbs loaded) but are towing it with a 2011 Tacoma 4.0 v6 Prerunner TRD off road w/tow package - max 6500 lbs.
We are wishing we had gotten a Ford F150 EB. Tacoma can pull it, but it really slows down on the hills. We are new to towing, and scared ourselves silly skidding to a stop down a road with mild slope one day. The truck weighs slightly less than the trailer - maybe not a good thing. Wheelbase is less than the F150 - seems a bit less stable.
Anyway, we are checking out this thread because we are shopping for a Ford. So most of the posts we are reading say if you want to tow a lot you should go with the 3.73 axle ratio. But this thread indicates maybe we would be ok with the 3.55. We are having a very hard time even finding 3.73s anywhere within 600 miles (supercabs, anyway). The dealers are indicating that the 3.73 is so popular they can't keep them in stock.
We will be towing all the time all across the country.
You guys have experience towing -- do you think the EB 3.55 would be almost as good as the 3.73 for 4000 lbs?
Thanks!

Haulin Bass!
11 EB SCAB 3.15 open rear. I get about 21 on the highway and 18-19 around town. Very hilly terrain though. I have the Ford brake controller as well. Tows my 21' Gambler bass boat like it's not even back there. No lugging. Pulls strong and fast. Beats the **** out of my old Titan.

Information still relevant in 2015
Loved reading this old thread. Information posted is still relevant in 2015. The 2015 Ecoboost 3.5L with 3.15 gears is rated to pull, by Ford, 10,700 lbs. and should get the best mileage. Seems like everyone still wants the lower gears and many still complain about mileage. Not sure why the standard higher gear is discounted so easily. Seems like might be old thinking or habit.
I think the posters in this thread were ahead of their time.

I have a 2013 Lariat with 3.31 gears. I've taken two 3200 mile trips with it since purchase. I found that if I keep it between 65 and 70 I get 24 mpg and at 60 to 65 I'll get 25 mpg. A friend of mine has 3.15 gears and he gets just a little more than I do. I was well aware of the mpg difference with the different gears and I would of bought the 3.15 if I could of found one in the trim level I wanted.

I have a 2014 fx2 luxury package w/ 3.15 gears. only have about 600 miles so only getting about 18.5-19.7. So, only on my 2nd fill up and breaking in. I am sure the miles will go up- but this is split 60/40 highway and city

Nice to read new (2015) comments in this old thread. Would love to read more tall gear towing experiences. I'm still amazed that the 3.15 axle is rated to tow around 1000 lbs more than last year's 3.55 axle, and nearly the same as the 2015 5.0 with the 3.73 axle. I'm looking forward to respectable gas mileage and a 10,700 tow rating when my order comes in.
