Default Ecoboost Black Start-Up Smoke

Dropped off my truck yesterday at the dealer for black-smoke on start-up and a clicking in the steering that can be felt through the steering wheel when going over oscillating pavement.

Anyone else have black-smoke on start-up issues? I'm hoping it isn't anything major. Truck is a 2011 XLT Ecoboost 4x4 w/21,000 miles.

They called at the end of the day and said they need the truck for one more day and would get back with me today...which has me a bit worried.

Video of smoke during start-up:

Looks ok to me. I'm guessing the engine was cold in that video.

seemed to go from black to white pretty quickly. White seems to be the norm in the Ecoboost. Cant hurt to check out, maybe a bad plug, cat conv. exhaust. Hopefully dealer can indentify and its an easy fix/repair. keep us posted.

my 2012 ecoboost chrome exhaust tip has been covered in soot a lot lately, I better keep my eye out.

They all do it to get the truck heated up fast for emissions

Should be getting the truck back today. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong with either the steering or the smoke. I do remember seeing an advanc-trac error warning on the center LCD before...surprised they found no codes of any sort.

Black smoke is normal. Look at the sticky thread in 2009+ section for steering popping over bumps, tsb for the rack

I would say that the exhaust video is pretty normal for a Direct Injection engine at cold start.
I am constantly having to wipe the "black" off my chrome exhaust tip.....but I AM going to pay closer attention to my cold start ups after seeing yours!!
