I have 4 5* tunes and none of them do this on mine.

This is the 1st I have heard.

I would suggest sending it the video to Mike and letting him see it, I don't think he means to say that "THAT" is normal.

Most of these trucks will surge a little going up a slight grade but not like that!

I've had the 93 tow/perf tune since 5* first released them and I have used it quite extensively and never had this issue. First time I have heard of it as well...

I have heard of some wastegate actuator solenoid issues that I imagined would sound like a repeated pop or thud as it let the boost off repeatedly. I still think this issue might be related but not sure. The problem I am talking about can happen to any truck, tuned or not but would show out worse tuned as usually tuned the boost rises faster.

I posted in another thread about this when it was happening to me, it sounded exactly like the op. It must've been something programming because after ford reflashed my ecu and mike made me a new tune file, it went away. Once I run this tank of 87 down I am going to update my tuner and then try the 91 to see if it does it.

One thing I do get is when I go wot on the highway to pass or whatever, I get that "intercooler condensation" like stutter for a bit. I haven't gone wot in quite some time and I haven't had a chance to gap the plugs yet. I'm hoping it is a combination of a little build up with less than stellar plug performance. I haven't gotten a cel yet, I only started going wot to clean it out yesterday.

Fair enough. Mike and 5* are still on my list.

I am in no way trying to bash Mike or 5star! I would defiantly recommend these tunes as most people dont seem to have this issue. The tune itself is awesome as far as power and transmission shifting except I think it just needs to shift gears before the turbo starts to surge, but I'm sure mike will fix it up when I get the updates done. Thanks again!

Sounds like compressor surge. Issues like these are why I don't think I'd buy 1 of these handhelds. I am used to having full control of the ecm. The tune needs to be adjusted to downshift under the exact condition that causes it.

I don't think it "needs" to downshift when it is about to do it. To me that is a cover up, mine shifts the exact same, pulls crazy hard in the gears at low rpm. I'm pretty sure it needs to have the new factory tune to cooperate with mikes tune. He said on another thread that he updates ford files frequently so if you have problems it will likely be fixed by updated the ford file. If his tune works with the newest calibration it's not surprising that it fights with an older calibration.

I've had the same issues with my MPT tune and to a lesser degree with the 5star tunes. My is smooth stock but all tunes surge like this for me. What's weird is that I ran a 5 star tune for months with no issues. Now it surges and the shifting is really harsh. I'm stock for now. I don't want to break anything.

I just got my tuner today from 5 Star and Ive tried the 89 towing 91 towing and the 91 performance and I get a terrible screeching noise from my turbos towards high RPM with wide open throttle. Its getting late and Ill set it back at the stock setting tomorrow morning. I guess Ill be giving 5 star a call as well im glad im not the only one with this issue though.

Had the updates done at dealer and got mike to re-do tune. Seems to be alot better with respect to turbos. With the update its even better shifting when trans is cold, no more hard shifting into 2nd like it usually did. The only thing i still hear with the tune is the turbos sound like they are almost sick!!!!!(not in a good way!!) instead of the nice whistle like it does under moderate throttle, when it gets up in boost it sounds like they are almost blowing a bit of water through them or something! I think this is probably what others are experiencing and am just glad it shifts without surging
