Thanks everyone for creating this post about the Eco spark plug gap. I have a 2011 FX4 built May of 2011. I have just under 12k on mine. Pulled the plugs and re-gapped to .033. I haven't driven it very far yet, but so far I'm very impressed. For the first time since I've owned the truck it actually idles at a steady rpm not wondering all over. It no longer revs up and down at stop lights. Throttle response at low rpms in much better especially in lock up under heavy boost. I've also noticed that it seems to idle lower too, or maybe it just seems like it since it's not continually varying the rpms trying to idle.

Gap from the factory was:
Pass Side: .037, .039, .040
Drivers Side: .039, .039, .036

I'll report back on mpg changes and if my 55mph+ shudder is gone after I've done more driving.

Glad it worked for you too. Same results here. I did mine about 1500 miles ago. No improvement in mileage for me but the drive ability is much better.

Just did mine also, let me say that mine were torqued way over 11ft lbs and had a hard time breaking the two back ones loose. All of the plugs were around .037 or .038 and set them at .032. Drove 60 highway miles afterward and noticed the better drive ability. My idle didn't seem to change much, but the miss at 50-60 was still there even though it seemed to be less prevalent. Need more miles to say for sure but seems to be a bit better, at least I know where they are set and can rule that out. Only thing I noticed was some brown around the base of the ceramic that I have never seen on a plug before, anyone ever seen this?

I haven't seen this on any other plugs before, but all 6 plugs looked like that on my 11 FX4 as well.

It's normal, not to worry about. Caused by oils on the porcelain insulator being heated heated through the plug body (called corona marring or something). It does not affect the plug or the engine or mean anything is wrong.

Torque required to break a fastener or other threaded object will always be greater than the torque specified for tightening. In the case of spark plugs, repeated heating and cooling cycles between two dissimilar metals that expand and contract at different rates causes the threads to bind, hence the greater effort required. It does not indicate that the plugs were over torqued from the factory.

Does anyone think a Boost-A-Spark could help the problem? I happen to have an extra one sitting in my garage from my Mustang that I could use.

Did mine today, 4 were 0.32, 2-0.36, had no problem with the truck but the idle , it was jumping around 100 rpms. You could even feel it inside the truck on the floor, like misfire. Dec 2012 fx4
