I took that as a hint that something in the fuel system can be damaged by running E85...and therefore over time will be weakened by the now popular E10 (aka regular gasoline in most places). If the DI system was bulletproof to ethanol then we should be able to run E85 no?

My Mazdaspeed 3 had a HPFP and it never even thought about hiccuping once in 60k miles. The Mazdaspeed forums have the occasional post concerning the HPFP but that is mostly about shoring the pump up for more horsepower. If they mention an outright pump failure it is usually in line with a normal fuel pump failure rate.

I'm thinking Ford learned a lot working with Mazda over the years, and how to make a reliable HPFP is one of the things learned. Making a DI engine that doesn't gum up the intake valves is another.

Now, the VW/Audi forums on those cars DI woes will make the hair on your neck stand up!

Hopefully, because Ford's record in the Powerstroke hpfp world is somewhat less than stellar. But again, the problems seem to stem from fuel quality (or lack therof) according to Ford........

2012 FX4 S/Crew w/EcoBoost ~ 15000 km

Yup, I've got that issue.
Check engine light came on on Thursday afternoon, took it in Friday and it had kicked 'Bank 1 Rich' and 'Bank 2 Rich' codes twice each.
Here's some background. I purchased the truck new in June, and I changed the oil to synthetic when I got it, changed the oil for the 'first' time in October at about 9000 km, I wasn't going to let the computer put 15000 km on it before I changed the oil....
Anyway, when I changed the oil that time, it seemed like there was alot more than 6 qts that came out, the oil really smelled of gas and it was quite thin. I was a little concerned, but checked on some of the boards and apparently the direct injection engines make the oil smell gassier than normal... So I kinda let it go.

A guy on my hockey team actually works at the Ford dealer, so I asked him about it, and he told me that he had had an EB in the shop a couple months before with gas in the oil, and it was a gasket on the High Pressure Pump that was leaking. But it set a check engine light, so that's what told them to check it. He told me that if mine was doing it eventually it would set the light off too. And it did on Thursday..

When the tech checked my truck yesterday, there was about an inch more 'oil' on the dipstick than should be there. He told me that he had just had a 2011 EB in for the same thing, had alot more miles on it than mine and it was so bad that the gas in the oil had rotted away alot of the seals in the engine, and was a big job to replace them all...

Anyway, they wanted the truck for the weekend, but I needed it so I got them to quickly drop the oil and put new oil in, just til Tuesday when they are going to replace the high pressure fuel pump.

The service manager told me that they have seen a few of these already.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted. Incidentally, my mileage has really been getting progressively worse over the last couple of months, but I attributed it to driving in 4WD and just short trips around town.

Later,
Rob

I talked to Geoff at full race he has done more research On the HPFP then anyone I know. The unit in the EB is a Bosch unit! It already hits max flow at 2143psi no way to get anymore out of it. He has tried everything

This might just be your truck. I knew a few people who had HPFP problems days after purchasing their NEW 335i's. I've had a couple long cranks but it was extremely cold outside. IMO if the f150 had a HPFP problem it would be all over the forum.

The cap less fuel filler thread is what like 12pgs long? A high pressure fuel pump failure would be front page news.

You are one of the first guys to jump all over posters with possible issues without hitting the search button first....and giving them an ear full. Here a dude posts his findings in a thread that pertains to fuel pump issues....now he is a troll....just sayin

And your point is......

This is not a large problem and its fishy to see people post things like that for their very first post. I'm not the only one who's thinking it. I'm just the one who said it first.

Oh, and there were 9 results when searching for HPFP failure.
