Default E85 tune and mpg

Curious as to what people are getting with an E85 tune and the 5.0 (of any custom tuner). Trying to figure out of the drop in mpg is justified by cheaper fuel. Don't get me wrong, love my mpt 87 tune, getting tired of paying borderline diesel prices for ethanol free.

Default Nope

e85 is $0.20 cheaper here in Texas. Nice power, smooth idle. HUGE drop in MPG. Around town I can eeek out 400 miles +/- on a tank of 93 with my tune. e85 drops to 315 if I am lucky!!!!

It's almost a dollar cheaper here. And yes I go from 17mpg on ethanol free to 14.8 using e10. Wasn't sure if tuners could squeeze some mpg out of them specifically for e85 or not.

since you are using mpt, they might can give you a better answer. But i dont believe you can push out better mpg than 87 oct tho.

I know with my stock truck I lose 4-5mpg running E85. With a good tune, I am sure that could be cut in half.

Don't know about MPT but when I had my custom tunes from 5* they told me that the E85 was completely controlled by stock programming and that they built on top of oem. That may have changed since it's been a while.

Yea that seems to be the general consensus. Its a shame if I could stay around 15.5 average I would be all about some e85.

I average 14.8 on the dash with E85, but I am 2wd RCSB.

It really depends on how much the price of fuel is in your area and if you want/need max HP.

Around here(Louisiana) E85 averages about $2.00 per gallon, 87 is around $2.50 and 93 is $3.00. If you do the math for 1000 miles a month, you will see the overall cost of E85 isn't much more or can be less.

1000 miles per month /19mpg = 52.63 gallons

52.63 gallons X $3 = $157.89 for 93oct

52.63 gallons X $2.50 = $131.58 for 87oct

1000 miles per month / 14mpg = 71.43 gallons

71.43 gallons X $2.00 = $142.86 for E85

So in my case E85 is cheaper than 93 octane and only slightly more expensive than 87. The increased performance of E85 is worth it to me.

MPT says we can run e85 on the 93 pr-x tune in the 5.0...it's certainly more widely available around here than 93 is. Wondering if the benefit of the e85 is what they say. They say the power will bump up too. Hmm.

e85 has less energy per gallon than unleaded.

93 and 89 have the same BTUs but the compression available through 93 before detonation can have it post a mild gain vs 89. e85 has excellent knock resistance, but the lack of energy per unit of measure requires way more to be sprayed in. you can get stupid power from e85, but you have to literally dump the stuff in.

e85 combusts cooler (being alcohol), but you won't ever see any efficiency gains with it - it takes way too much to create any amount of power.
