If you were asking me it's a 26 gallon tank and it'll go over 500 miles if I stay on the freeway from San Diego to San Francisco bay area. Did it twice.

3.55 gears. 17" tires. Don't know why the mileage is so high but I'm happy. I've had it about three and a half months and it's got over 15,000 miles. Lots of business travel.

Went from San Diego to La Habra (north of Anaheim, Disneyland) and stopped at my seat co. Back to the freeway to Ontario and then home to Escondido. 26.1 when I pulled into my driveway. 65mph no higher.

I've checked it by hand calcs and it's always within a couple tenths either way.

In my experience moderate acceleration vs slow acceleration, your not gaining anything. Just drive. You gain more from coasting. Say you had a quarter mile between lights and the speed limit is 45. If you slow accel and it takes 1/8 mile to get to 45 you'll get worse than if you drive "normal" and get speed faster then take it easy to the light. Coast as much as you can on the far end.

Assuming you put 19.5gal in the tank (I'm assuming you don't go below a 1/4) then damn. I applaud you. That's 25.6mpg assuming 500 miles. My hats off to you.

You told the OP to get a tune and by the looks of your signature you have a tune and a lot of other mods that surely cost quite a bit of money yet you only gained 3/10 of a mpg more than him?

What am I missing in this equation? You would have to drive a million miles to break even
Not a dumb question. I didn't want to write a long novel about the mods and mileage changes with each. My best tank ever before mods was 18.1. My best tank ever after mods was 19.1. Not great but those are my bests. My lifetime average is only slightly better than his because for the first 15k miles the average was 16.5ish. After the mods it's been slowly rising to the 17.6 it is now. I hope that makes things clearer.

I get better mpg driving it like I stole it rather than babying it around. As long as you don't go overboard. A tuner probably will increase your mpg but you will not break even on the purchase--that's not why I tuned mine. CAI and exhaust on the Ecoboost is also a losing proposition. You may gain mpg, but not enough to pay for the mods.

I can't get that coasting with a tail wind downhill. I do find that mine goes up and down depending on where I buy gasoline. I keep track of my distance to empty when I buy gas, and I am happy when I see 430 miles on the indicator.

I've explained this 3860482710473576437289 times before, but I guess I'll do it again.

Mechanically: Things that will help mpg - pure gas, lower ride height, econo-tunes (like from 5 star that makes the turbo less active at part throttle), cat-less downpipe, tonneau cover or fastback hatch. Things that won't help - CAI, cat back, thermostat, high octane fuel (controversial, I know).

Behaviorally: Things that will help mpg - Accelerate briskly, drive slower (I lose 6 mpg going from 65 to 75), maximize coasting (I can't stress this enough, drive like you don't even have brakes, anticipate stops, etc), draft if you can safely, don't let the engine idle for longer than you have to. Things that won't help - slow acceleration, driving like a grandpa, driving like there's an egg on the gas pedal.

Using these methods, I've averaged 20.3 over 22,000 miles, with as high as 24 mpg over 2,400 miles on a trip.

This is probably my main problem. Driving 65 in Texas isn't an easy task.

Thanks for posting this link. Interesting info there.

They say they have the "most efficient configuration" (2wd, 3.15 gear, supercrew), which is exactly what I have and I get great mileage.

Also, they stated:

70-mph - 22.3 mpg
60-mph - 25.5 mpg
50-mph - 31.6 mpg
45-mph - 33.9 mpg
40-mph - 32.6 mpg

Whereas I posted on 7/2011:

55 - 30.1
65 - 26.8
70 - 24.5
75 - 20.9
80 - 19.5
