Default Driveshaft clunk? There's a fix for that.

I've noticed that when I accelerate at half throttle or more from a dead stop, my driveshaft would make a clunking noise. It's done this since it was stock, but became more pronounced lately. Anyway, I took it into Ford earlier this week and my service advisor was well aware of the problem. He told me it has occurred on several newer model F-150's. Basically, they just R&R'd the driveshaft, re-lubed the slip yoke, and test drove it to confirm the problem no longer existed.

My truck now actually feels much better when accelerating from a dead stop, and there's no more clunk. Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else was experiencing it.

This was a pretty common problem on the 04-08 F150s as well. I had that problem on my '05. This is the first I've heard of it on the newer models but maybe I just haven't paid much attention because I don't have it. I ended up selling my '05 before I ever had anything done about it. But, from what I read, you can re-lube the slip yoke and it will only temporarily fix the problem. On the older models I had read where guys had to lube it multiple times. I'm not sure what the interval between was though.

Regreasing your slip yoke can be done in your garage with everyday tools. I think YouTube has a video. It is the only fix for the clunk and the grease will wear out and you'll have to do it/get it done again. It would be NICE if Ford put a grease fitting there so that we could do this very quickly ourselves. Or maybe that is a good idea for a Mod?

Ford ended up completely redesigning the drive shaft for the 2012 model because of this. There were some other minor changes made as well.

Well if they redesigned it for 12, they failed, mine clunks too, but it also depends on when the clunk is heard. Mine clunks when I put it in gear when the engine is first started and the RPM's are high.

That is most likely due to the higher rpm during the transmission engagement.
