Don't most plugs come with a crush washer that allows for a 1/4-1/2 turn before there's any real stress put on the threads? I did hand tight as well and the 1/4-1/2 turn to flatten the washer against the port.

SOME plugs have a crush washer. Many, like the ones in this engine, have a tapered sealing surface. Look at the pics, it's metal-to-metal contact with no crush washer for fudge room. This is why torque specs are important. The proper torque will get them tight enough to seal and not come loose, yet not tight enough to cause thread damage.
