A knock sensor these days don't just listen for a knock. They also are used to sense the advancement of the crank. A positive knock reading means it's going to retard the timing to either make it quit or prevent pingin. A negative knock reading will advance the timing because the engine can handle more power. That's basically how it works in a nutshell.
