Question Dark Blue Smoke

I've been lurking around here a while learning as much as I can about the ecoboost before I go buy one. I finally go to the dealership with the intention of buying a supercrew. I walked around and found the perfect one, 2013 gray F150 xlt 4x4 with a build date of 1/26/13. The salesman brought out the keys and he fires it up. I see there's only 3 miles on the truck so I'm assuming it just came off the transport truck. He drives it out the lot and let's me drive it. During the drive, there was a strong burning odor. Salesman tells me it's just the coating they put on the engine that's burning off. We get back and I parked the truck leaving the engine on. I go out to look and there is a flume of blue smoke coming from the tailpipe. Again, the salesman tells me it was normal. It did not look normal to me. A mechanic sees the truck smoking and comes by. I asked him if that was normal and he said no. He told the salesman to take it to the servic department to have it looked at. Salesman takes the truck to the service dept and returns then asks me to go inside to talk about buying the truck. I gave him the "are you f***ing serious?" look. I told him politely that I'll have to think about it. Now I'm having major second thoughts about the ecoboost engine. Some help explain why the truck was blowing smoke, literally.

I wish I could help you with the blue smoke but I cant. I can however tell you when I just got my 2013 5.0 for the first 30 miles or so it did smell like a burning smell but quickly went away. Im really on the fence about the ecoboost. My dad has a 2012 eco and just turned 10000 miles and he hasnt had a single issue with it. His brother in law has a 2013 eco and with 2000 miles on it has already had it back to the dealership 9 times already. Thats not a typo 9 times!. My uncle has a 2012 eco boost and last week while towing a 3000 pound snowmobile trailer his check engine light came on and he lost power and had to be towed. His eco has 14500 miles on it.

I just don't see how a 215 cubic inch twin turbo motor is going to work in a 6000 pound pickup truck. I hope Im wrong I really do but I cant see Ford using these 3.5 motors in a pickup truck much longer. IMHO go with the 5.0 V8. just my .02.

The smell is normal on any new vehicle, especially the ecoboost as there is more plastic under the hood due to the intercooler piping. It'll go away after a few miles. The blue smoke out of the tailpipe is certainly not normal. Oil is getting into the chamber somehow. I'd steer clear of that truck but don't be afraid of the ecoboost. It's a good engine and it's a shame to see how some problems get so amplified on these forums. On a side note, don't buy the ecoboost for fuel economy alone. You'll most likely be disappointed if that's your sole reason. Buy it because you like the feel, power delivery, and low end torque of it. If it gets better fuel economy than a 5.0, that's just a bonus.
