Default Custom tunes with the 5.0 and cooling fans

I thought it might be beneficial to start a thread on this subject. Some of us are running different vendors tunes like 5*,MPT and SSI etc. I have sent out a few pm's asking some of you about your 5.0 tune and when your cooling fans come on and how hard. I also called the above mentioned and asked them questions about their tunes and how they set the cooling fan strategy on THE 5.0
I mainly asked about the performance tunes which all offer. I believe 5* told me that ford doesn't even have the fans strategy set at 80%. 5* did say they adjust the strategy for service guys over in Afghanistan to come on earlier. My truck is currently SSI tuned as of yesterday and I love it! When it heats up the fans come on and run hard at 100%.Others have told me the same thing. I have been told that the ford thermostat for our 5.0's are 210 and my tune is suppose to bet set for a 170 T-stat. SSI recommended me going ahead and installing a 170 T-stat.Thats probably why mine comes on and runs that hard, as it was over 90 yesterday. I believe I saw some pics in another thread of the mustangs and they use a lower one like 180 I believe. Of course that is a car. MPT said they can upgrade their tune for it so apparently they don't build it initially for that, not sure. It would be good if anyone that has custom tuned their 5.0 and has data logged a before and after to see how hot their engine and transmission is getting. Just wondering how many custom tuned trucks cooling fans are setup and if you have had any issues with engine, transmission, fans or related electrical issues? And are you running a lower temp T-sat? The recommended T-stat is a 170* Reische Ford 50.
I know this is a long post but just thought it would be better to shed some light on the issue so all can read and contribute. Thanks!

Just a couple of contributions (though don't have any tune) ...
  1. the F-150 5.0L stock thermostat is 190°F (as per Motorcraft). *part # RT-1217 / BL3Z-8575-A
    .
  2. observed that on my 2011 the cooling fans kick-on when the coolant temperature reaches 204°F
    .
  3. the Mustang 5.0L stock thermostat is 180°F. *part # RT-1208 / BR3Z-8575-A

I confirmed my tune with the 170 T-stat, so I did order one of these today.

Interesting Joe, I thought it was 210. Glad you cleared that up. Also i would guess if the fans are set to go to a max of 100% strategy then they will be loud as per 5* said they under factory tune 5.0 do not.

Another member here told me he Data logged his today and his coolant temp stayed around 200*, so that definitely has to be correct, a 190 *stock. Thanks, Wayne

So if I go back to the stock tune say for a dealer oil change, And it is looking for the 190, it shouldn't matter being a lower temp 170 stat on factory tune right?

It shouldn't, I don't think they could tell anyways.

If your taking your truck to the track every weekend or tow a lot, the cooler t-stat would be ideal, for a daily driver and only occasionally going to the track or towing once in a while there is no good reason to switch unless you just feel the need, it's not exactly in the best place for a quick swap, not hard to change but not like when they were right on top of the intake manifold.

170 Tstat means the water/AF mix will flow at a lower temp. This is independent from the fans. Shawn can adjust fan speed for you if it is overly annoying.

I allow the fans to run so that my engine runs cooler.

Yes. Shawn told me I needed to change the T-stat even though the fans run hard when it gets really hot outside. He said I am making more power and that it would be better that cooler temps enter earlier. I mostly just DD with this truck. I think this would maybe be more beneficial for the engine overall would it not? This tune is set for that so to get the full benefit shouldn't we be running the 170 if tuned for it?
