I would again offer you should go to: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com
Everything you want to know about the difference in viscosity at 212 degrees is there. The forums also have plenty of information for you if you want specific information or advice.

This thread is surprisingly interesting.
Manufacturers will undoubtedly split the difference if it means better fleet CAFE.
I wonder (maybe for the first) if there may be more politics involved in this choice.
I can hear the accountant saying,"just get them out of warranty".
On the other side the percentage difference in viscosity between these oils must be minimal at best.
But you know, 10% @ 200K miles is 40k miles, and that is alot to some folks.........
But still, a miniscule difference in viscosity must mean an even more miniscule effect on mpg, right????........?????

For giggles there is a chart in this PDF that will show you the difference in actual viscosity at temp between 5-20 and 5-30.

A very well placed and interesting post!
At first I thought it was simply an advertisement for synthetic oil.
But really it was all about viscosity, and recommends mfg stated minimum viscosity requirements.
(unless in extreme conditions....)
Nice post.
Gives me faith.

Great info.........With this information I'm going to stick with the recommended 5W-20 and as miles go by, maybe make the switch to 5W-30 as the miles increase........Thanks Guys

Just finished changing out the factory fill with 5W-20 pennzoil platinum full syn........I believe 5W-20 is the way to go as of now....by the way a FL820 will screw on......but I used a purolator pure one 22500 filter just to make sure....................................sure is a small filter......

You should think about your warranty as well. If something were to go wrong, and they knew you were running that oil, I'm sure they could absolutely find a way to deny you any warranty repairs on the engine, depending on your dealer of course.

Ford only recommends Motorcraft oil.....
