Default Bypass valve conversion to Blowoff valve, routing to atmosphere

So, there's been some discussion about routing the BPV's to atmosphere. This is possible because the ECM doesn't use the MAF. I finally decided to try it, because I loved the way my old turbo 383 sounded. I used...

http://www.jegs.com/i/Airaid/028/770-137/10002/-1

...to filter the disharge air. Of course, this isn't necessary, but I wanted to make sure no grime builds up on the valve itself in the long term. I would NOT use this one again, though, because it doesn't fit well on the outlet barb. I would use a 1" male filter and a short piece of 1" hose.

I used...

http://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber-caps/=j3f762

...to plug the barbs on the air piping. They are high temperature silicon caps that should hold up in the long-term. I used a 1", but would NOT use it again, as it was too tight of a fit. I would use the 1 1/16" if done again. PN is 92805K41 for the bigger one. Edit: I verified that the barb on the bypass valve is 1", but the barb on the air piping is 1 1/16". So, 92805K41 is the correct size.

I've driven it some and it sounds great! It sounds especially good with the 5 Star tuning, because it builds boost at light throttle. No codes and no rich condition so far. Of course, no performance increase should be expected. My advice is that if you aren't familiar and experienced with fast turbo cars, don't do it. I've heard lots of people (probably those used to v8's in trucks) complaining about "weird" popping noises coming from intakes. If this is you, DON'T DO IT. You'll probably be annoyed by the sound. But if you are an experienced turbocharging fanatic, driven modified turbo cars, and like the noises they make, do it for sure.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Thought about doing something like this, and making my own "intake".

Any chance we could get a video of it in action? Curious to hear it.

I don't have an I-phone or any way to video it, but it's easy to do a short-term test just to see if you like it. All you have to do is unhook one end of the bypass hose. It will allow unfiltered air both directions, but for a spin around the block probably wouldn't hurt anything.

Now that I've had a little extra time to look, I think this filter would work better:

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...chTerm=62-1040

You would need a short (~2") piece of 1" high temperature hose to connect it to the outlet barb on the BPV.

The problem with the filter I bought was that the "flange" wasn't long enough to slip down the barb and get good "bite" with a hose clamp. I think that's going to be the case with all the "clamp on" valvecover breather's that would otherwise work well. With a 1" hose, you can cut it to the right length and I believe it would be sturdier.

I imagine it would be crazy with the unleashed 93 tune. You can make the bov go crazy as is, with a quick throttle into boost and let off, and that's with the stock intake...

What kind of sound does this resemble? Pardon my ignorance, but the only blow off sounds that I am familiar with are what I would call a high pitched stutter or a
. Those descriptions are probably way off for the more educated, but the only thing that comes to mind for me. I'm guess the first one is due to some kind of very custom system and this mod would sound much closer to the second.

Again, sorry if I am way off, I just don't have too much knowledge in forced induction systems.
