Default Buying a new used truck, opinions

My 2010 FX4 was stolen from my laneway and beat on for a few days before the cops found it. Anyway I'm in the market for a used truck.
So I'm thinking a 2012 or 13 but just don't know which way to go motor wise. Really don't want to start a war between the 5.0 and eco guys just looking for non bias info on what to stay away from? or to look for.

One question I have is all things being equal which one is more fun to drive? I ran a VMP 87 tune on my 5.4 and liked it so if I did the same to a eco or a 5.0 would the performance be about equal between the two??

As a note I've been driving a 2015 Ram Hemi (rental) for the past two week and have to say I am very impressed with the fuel mileage. Maybe that just goes to show what a pig my 5.4 was. How would eco and 5.0 compare fuel mileage with a new Hemi....if some say better then

Look forward to all your opinions..

Cheers
Allan

Both engines are good, both can have issues, I know that doesn't help much but that about sums it up.
5.0 possible engine knock, Ecoboost possible timing chain issues.

Yes I suppose that's true. Just thought maybe one year might stand out as being more troublesome.
Thanks

Well in my research I found the 2013 ecoboost had no recalls... I guess that says something, but maybe not.
Yet that doesn't mean some people with the 2013's haven't had issues

Imo... If you tow anything over 6k get the eb, if below that the 5.0 is great! Just depends on your needs, and wants! Good luck on your search...

Thanks guys.. It's more about wants.
I have a 18ft bass boat that I tow about a mile to the lake and that's it. Other than that it hauls fire wood, atv's and 90% of the time just my ***.
That being said I definitly enjoy a powerful hard running truck with lots of throttle response (all within the laws of the road of course). After driving the Hemi for a couple weeks I even considered buying one of those but I just can't do it....lol

Fun? Ecoboost hands down with a tune. You will giggle and the only mod a 5.0 could add to surpass would be a blower - but to be fair, it would REALLY pass a tuned ecoboost lol.

Best of luck.

Don't rule out the 6.2 if you're looking for a used truck. Instant low end power and a towing beast. MPG's will be close to the same as your 5.4 though.

Sorry to hear your truck was stolen, I'm on my 2nd 2013 for that very same reason. Both 5.0s as I prefer the simplicity of the normally aspirated engine.

I get 23mpg at 60mph on the highway.

Agree with kameronth, the 6.2 is a good choice too, and it's bulletproof.

Don't know where you are in the US, but CARMAX usually has a great selection, even though you might pay a bit more than some other places.
