I just hope this is just isolated to the 2011s. Some of the pics of blown EBs do look like the timing chain let go first. Is this an interference motor? I've also noticed that most of the blown motors have been 2011s.

It seems odd to actually break the timing chain. I've seen chains stretch but never really break.

Looking at the timing chain, it's a long one.

Thanks for hoping us 2011 guys are the only ones getting blown motors lol. You say it looks like most blown engines are from 2011....there's been less than 10 that I can recall posting on here. Not a large number really.

My truck is coming apart very soon for a timing chain so I'll do my best to try and post pictures comparing the current part with the original one. Still trying to research the procedure, so I don't know I'll be doing the job this weekend...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not wishing anyone bad luck just hoping I don't have to go through that. I'll agree that there hasn't been a lot of blown EBs, but it seems like the majority of those were 2011s. Still not bad for a high volume engine.

I take it your doing the repair? You might as well replace the water pump while your in there.

Guys - I am not overly computer savvy but I have tried to get this posted to show you some proof. Here is some communication between the dealer and the Ford hotline assistance in my 2nd most recent timing chain failure......And yes you will notice that the Eco is an interference motor!
This truck has 141,859 km's on it and it basically just quit and had to be towed. You will notice that Ford mentions "mechanical failure from a weak timing chain"

There has obviously been no epidemic of EB's blowing up, but I would say Watt-Maker is correct in saying those have mostly been 2011s. There have not been many posts about 2012 or 2013s blowing up for any engine model, but 2011 Ecoboosts have been the most likely, although it could just be due to having a bit more volume sold than other engines. Perhaps Ford did have a problem and they have started using a newer model timing chain.

Even the 5.0L has a timing chain tensioner replacement on the very early 2011s

5.0L ENGINE - METALLIC RATTLE OR SCRATCHING TYPE NOISE FROM FRONT OF LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AT IDLE - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 3/31/2011

Out of curiosity (to the OP) - what business/ industry are you in?

Just curious what kind of conditions the trucks are in regularly - whether it be oil fields or a flower delivery business. :-)

Let's temper the widespread issue, we have absolutely no clue how many of anything has been an issue with the EB motor. Forums are a very small fraction of the trucks on the road. Most don't even bother with forums, and you sure are not going to hear FORD advertise a widespread issue unless there forced to issue a recall. Many EB's haven't even made it to the 80k mile mark yet,, that fact that the 2011's as pointed out are having issues make sense, they have accrued more mileage being on the road..I don't care what motor/truck you have. The most important thing you can do no matter what truck you got is get the longest warranty you can buy period. I can tell you I will start flipping my trucks ever 7yrs instead of holding them any longer, they don't seem to be holding up regardless..too many electronics controlling the trucks and there bound to burn out and cause the ripple effect on your motor.
