The problem seems to be the worst with the 11's. However, that could also be because the 11's have the most mileage. I will say that Ford just updated the timing chain part. It's not known if this will solve the problem, but there are several years with the same part number. This means the problem could be spread out to ultimately include the 14's as well.

It's pretty much guaranteed that you will be replacing the vacuum pump at some point. The newer pump is now made of plastic so it shouldn't have the corrosion problem the original pump had. Not sure when the part numbers were changed for the pump, just make sure it gets replaced under warranty.

Do we know the new timing chain part number?
I'm wondering if I got the new one or not.

I didn't know about a vacuum pump too? Cord, would you buy another EB again after what you went through? In order to get the level truck I want (fx2 or lariat), I'll have to get no newer than 2012 now to stay in budget. Is that a bad move? Or save my pennies for longer and get 2013 or 2014?

Yeah the pump is like a $600 - $800 deal if you're out of warranty. I just did exactly what you want to do. I had an 11 Ecoboost XLT and traded it in on an 11 Ecoboost Lariat. The prices had come down enough so I wanted to get the 40/20/40 bench and also the higher trim.

What I wasn't expecting was to buy a truck that had pre-existing problems.

- timing chain stretched
- CAC problems
- turbo issue

This truck had 64,000km or about 40,000 miles when I bought it... Really not much mileage so it's strange it's having these issues which I attribute to the previous owner doing cheapy oil changes (timing chain)

It's at the dealer as I type this hopefully getting fixed after many months of arguing with dealers.

If you buy an 11 Eco make sure you can hear a COLD start, IE the vehicle hasn't been started or touched for a few DAYS.

I would also strongly suggest you buy a Ford ESP as well.... I got mine from FD-Warranty.

They got that pump behind the headlight where water collects almost like a design afterthought of " now where can we put this thing, oh I know, hidden out of the way down there." Should be closer to warmth I believe.

That's such a loaded question. I love the power of the engine. Truck handles great. It has a nice interior too. Tows good too. If I was shopping for a truck, would I look at a older model? No, not unless I got a extended service plan. Would have paid for it the first time we tore the engine apart. However, now that I'm over 100,000 miles, I've really had no other engine complaints so I wouldn't have used the plan a second time.

Now if I totaled my truck today, would I go to a Dodge or GM? No, I like the engine enough to come back. But I would for sure get the ESP. Honestly, if I was in this predicament, I'd probably get a 350. The Ecoboost being such a sweet motor has never really satisfied my diesel itch.

Honestly, a '13 or '14 is still in the trouble range, so I don't see there being an advantage to waiting. However, once the '15's come out there could be some additional depreciation to the older models and buyers trade their trucks in for the latest and greatest. For that reason, there could be some incentive to wait until just after new years. Besides, then it's cold and salesmen are trying to make their quota.

I believe you can do vacuum pump yourself in about an hour for like $350. Dealer cost is like $800 out the door...

Thanks for all the insight. I think that's a great point on the 2015 knocking resale prices down some. The 350 or 250 is more than I need and pricing for a nice one puts you over $30k for sure. It's frustrating about this Motor (which I don't have to tell you guys) because the idea of the motor is great; but I also would hate to be out of warranty and rack up thousands in motor repair/replace. You can buy the extended warranty as you say but you shouldn't really have to worry about being necessary to get you past 70k miles. My brother in law has Nissan frontier (which is nothing great I know) with 250k miles on it and he really doesn't even take care of it other than change the oil and it's given him zero problems. You would think ford selling $40k plus trucks could at least do the same!!

You would think a truck with 40k miles would be "almost new" when you get it. I know anyone can trash a vehicle if they want but at 40k miles as long as they change the oil with anything at normal intervals you'd think you would be fine. Are these motors too delicate or finicky that everything has to be perfect or they fail? At this point I think I'm only looking at 2012 or newer eb's. And I'll likely have to wait until new year and hope prices some down some for the '12's or '13's....
