Some accuse them of "gold plating" it, or "trying to buy a cadillac when a chevy will do just fine". However, cost controllers, management, efficiency experts, six sigma blackbelts, etc... are put into place to beat the engineers down on cost. They will argue back and forth for a while and the engineer has to defend his design and its cost. In nearly every case, the engineer has to compromise and back off on cost/quality. The engineer does the best he can to ensure he designed something that still works reasonably well at the reduced cost level. In many cases, it works just fine. However, in some cases it doesn't, which results in faulty speakers, AC blend door, transmission anti-drainback valve, or door lock (on my truck, at least).

The key is to figure out how to keep costs under control while picking just the right things to cheap out on without sacrificing reliability or quality. If you get that part right, you make a lot of money. It really is a balancing act.
I know it's old, but I couldn't help but appreciate this comment as I read through this thread. I've been in product engineering for 15 years now for a vehicle manufacturer. The scrutiny over cost from non-engineering functions within organizations has continually increased in that time. Rightfully so, in most cases. Many engineers, myself included, have a tendency to over-design products, as we would do for ourselves. The outside scrutiny should be in the spirit of finding the right balance between reliability, durability, cost, safety, owner experience etc... for the product. Sometimes, the pendulum swings too far in one direction. Regardless of which direction that is, the customer is usually impacted. One of my former bosses said it best, "our challenge is to choose the correct balance/comprimise."

Carry on.....

maybe we need to poll and do an advisory on this.

So, if a fleet and a good % of these trucks that are over lets say >75,000 miles are experiencing this... its pretty much an issue just as big as the Cam phaser 3 valve issues with the 5.4

However, I gotta wonder whether a stretched chain is the result of poor lubrication, engineering (timing chain/tensioner), the addition of boost from a tune or just heavy duty work.

I'm sure its a combination of the aforementioned, but its like with the 5.4 3V, if you oil change with synthetic from the get-go, ever 3,000 miles, you can take overly cautious and preventive measures...

I'd imagine with pushing 21lbs of boost, you likely should do both spark plugs and oil changes must quicker, with the amount of fuel dilation that will occur with our DI motors.

I think if this was really a frequent occurrence we would see a lot more chatter about it on the forum...but we don't. Not something I would be too concerned about yet.

Sounds like a whole bunch of trucks that get started, not warmed up correctly if at all and then beat on by drivers that don't care about them. And who knows how they are being serviced.

I could ruin a new truck in 10K miles........any truck.

Crumbling differentials the OP- thread. It must be very difficult conditions of work trucks.
