Blown Ecoboost Motors and Tuned or not?
#12
^ I agree that maybe there should have been an option about not having any problems, also maybe even a fallow up question could be if tuned how many miles has your truck been tuned? Maybe also could ask about driving habits whether it's heavy towing, heavy abuse ( heavy footing ) or taking it easy?

The poll is about blown engines, not engines without an issue.
One issue with this poll, however, is that the percentage of tuned engines is going to be higher here than in the general population.

My main goal was to see the relation between blown motors and "tuned" or not "tuned".
Being completely honest, the motors that are letting go are concerning to me. I have been modifying vehicles for a very long time and have never seen issues like we are seeing today.
To clarify, I am guessing that we are going to see a few motors with "Never tuned" in this poll. What does that mean to me? Nobody safe! Why is that concerning to me? Because I don't want Ford denying a $10,000+ repair because of something they "think" caused it when it was a failure on there part.
So seeing more tuned versus non-tuned needs to be taken lightly. It "could" mean that a tune is just more likely to "uncover" Fords issue. Key being, if you are not modded, you have a better chance of it being covered under warranty.

Probably should have made the poll results public. Don't ever trust an ecoboost owner.

Interesting poll.
IMHO the Ecoboost is already tuned for close to max from the factory. If you look at Ford's patents and such on it, there is a LOT of monitoring and software controls wrapped around the Ecoboost. Lots. I think it's running near the edge but with a small cushion for "whoops'ees" in the software.
Tune it and it can and does go south in a hurry, especially if you do something stupid like run a super tune on regular gas. It's not like engines of old where there is a lot of cushion in the performance of the engine.
But it is an interesting poll.
I say just keep her stock and enjoy the ride. If you want to tinker, be prepared to pony up lots of $$$. But don't blame Ford when it blows up after tinkering.

I have to disagree with you about the Eco being at max. Ford is planning on keeping this engine in the lineup for a while. If they launch the engine with mild power numbers they can gradually increase them over time. I believe for the new 2015 f150 the ecoboost 3.5 will get a power increase. Probably due to Chevys 6.2 putting down more power. All ford needs to do is a software update and that's it. And when sales for the motor become stagnet ford and increase the power gain slightly for hope in new interest.
